Historique

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN Women Internship Programme offers a small group of outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UN Women’s work. It is designed to complement women’s development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, but also complements other international studies, including law. We accept students currently enrolled in a master’s, post-master’s or doctorate programme, or in the final year of a bachelor’s programme as well as recent graduates (maximum one year after graduation).

Internship assignments vary greatly in terms of content. They may have a country-specific, regional, sectoral, or thematic focus. However, interns are normally involved in some aspect of the design, implementation and evaluation of UN Women–supported programmes and projects. Every attempt is made to match the interests of the intern with the needs of the organization.

Internship assignments vary in length, between two and six months, according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UN Women. Assignments are available on a part-time and full-time basis throughout the year.

Project Background

In response to calls from Justice and Security institutions for increasing accountability of the Rule of Law in Palestine, and aiming at enhancing gender equality commitments and access of women and girls to justice, UN Women and UNDP jointly  implement the Programme “Strengthening the Rule of Law in the oPt: Justice and Security for the Palestinian People” (2014-2017). The programme supports the process of creating systems and capacity development of the justice and security sectors in Palestine through institutionalizing systems, policies, procedures and mechanisms related to the protection and empowerment of all Palestinian people with focus on women, children victims of violence.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the UN Women Rule of Law Project Specialist, the intern will assist the programme with a research and knowledge management.

A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon and feedback will be provided both in real time as well as a summary of work accomplished at the end of the internship.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
