Antecedentes

Under the supervision of the Governance, Peace and Security (GPS) Advisor and in collaboration with other members of the GPS team, the selected candidate will assist and support the work of the governance section, with a particular emphasis on the production of the "Progress of the World's Women" report, which is produced every two years focusing on a special theme each time.

Deberes y responsabilidades

1. Support the research and writing of the report in various tasks, as requested by the Advisor, including:

  • Background cross-national and country specific research, including literature reviews
  • Research and writing of case studies on good governance, accountability and gender
  • Research and writing papers focused on specific issues related to the report's main theme, as needed

2. Over all coordination for the production of the report as requested by the Advisor, including administrative and logistic support:

  • Produce work plans, timelines, schedules and others, as necessary to meet important deadlines
  • Coordinating the call for and timely delivery of background papers
  • Liaising with authors of background papers, contributors of case studies and main writing leaders
  • Coordinating meetings with Advisory Board members, Reviewers and UNIFEM internal staff
  • Attending and producing minutes of all meetings related to the production of the report, following- up on action points

3. Support planning and programming in the GPS section, through additional research and coordination / administrative tasks, as requested by the Advisor.

Competencias

  • Familiarity with the internet and the use of web based information systems, production / update of web content, internet searches.
  • Ample knowledge and use of computer office tools (word, data base, spread sheets, web content production, filing)
  • Excellent research skills, both at the theoretical and practitioner's level. Ability to conduct literature reviews, compile analytical bibliographies, and write cogent summaries of reports or analytical documents.
  • Outstanding writing skills and the ability to synthesize large amounts of information into succinct written notes/reports, summaries. Ability to effectively communicate complex issues to non-experts in a simple and user-friendly way.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively across different constituencies.
  • Demonstrated capacity to perform effectively within a multicultural work environment, tact and ability to deal with confidential matters in a discreet and reliable manner.
  • Ability to participate effectively in a team-based, information-sharing environment, to collaborate and cooperate with others.
  • Willingness to accept additional responsibilities as required by the demands of the service.
  • Willingness to combine research and writing tasks with coordination and administrative tasks is absolutely necessary.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and excellent organizational and coordination skills. Capacity to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks on time. Ability to set priorities; work under pressure with colleagues at all levels.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

  • Post-graduate degree ( Masters or above) in development studies, economics, international relations, gender studies or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the development field, including relevant research experience.
  • Understanding of statistical-based research and data analysis is necessary. Experience working with international datasets and actual knowledge of quantitative analysis and related software (i.e. spss, stata) is a strong asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of  another UN language is desirable.
