Antecedentes

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Strategic Partnership Division (SPD) is responsible for proactively driving the strategic positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. SPD is organized into three branches: Resource Mobilization, Civil Society, and Communications.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Communications & Advocacy and in support of UN Women’s coordination mandate, the Digital Communications Specialist is responsible for the editorial and technical maintenance of the UN inter-agency online content curation platform UN Women Watch and its related social media and email distribution channels. The Digital Communications Specialist is also responsible for enhancing and guiding UN Women’s digital presence and strategies. To this end, s/he oversees and undertakes the development, production and design of compelling interactive, visual communications and digital products; monitors and analyzes UN Women website analytics to inform digital strategies; and provides guidance and training on digital technologies and standards.

  • Undertakes and oversees the editorial and technical maintenance of UN WomenWatch curation platform;
  • Undertakes digital distribution, promotion, monitoring and website analytics;
  • Undertakes and oversees the development, production and design of interactive, visual communications, and digital products.

Undertakes and oversees the editorial and technical maintenance of UN WomenWatch curation platform:

  • Curates UN system news, speeches, press releases, videos and photos and events for UN Women Watch’s Gender Equality News Feed and Events Calendar;
  • Updates and publishes relevant HTML and XML files on UN Women Watch with relevant curated content;
  • Liaises closely with UN entities’ web managers, editors and UN system gender focal points to gather and cross-promote relevant information on the UN system’s work on gender equality;
  • Oversees and undertakes front-end technical tasks and technology upgrades of WomenWatch content curation platform and RSS feeds;
  • Monitors and identifies editorial and technological trends in digital content curation and applies them  to UN Women.

Undertakes digital distribution, promotion, monitoring and and website analytics:

  • Oversees the distribution of content for UN Women Watch social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest) daily;
  • Oversees email alerts of the UN Gender Equality Newsfeed (UN Women Watch);
  • Arranges for or undertakes the set-up of newsletter templates, as needed, for major external communications initiatives and outreach purposes;
  • Develops partnerships to promote UN system gender equality news feed through relevant distribution channels;
  • Researches and implements new avenues for digital content distribution and promotion;
  • Regularly monitors and reports on website analytics to inform digital strategies online (e.g. user experience, information architecture, SEO, etc);
  • Provides training on email distribution and web analytics platforms for external communications purposes, as needed.

Undertakes and oversees the development, production and design of interactive, visual communications, and digital products:

  • Arranges for, oversees or undertakes the research, storyboarding, production, design and development of a range of interactive, visual communications and digital products on UN Women priority areas through multiple platforms, as part of regular external communications initiatives and outreach. This includes, but is not limited to, infographics, graphs, charts, data visualizations, animations, micro-videos, maps, transmedia features, quizzes, web and mobile applications;
  • Oversees and undertakes the production of existing digital products, such as UN Women’s Year in Review interactive timeline;
  • Assesses, arranges for and implements project’s scope, timing, work effort and budget throughout a given project life cycle for long-term digital products (such as interactive web applications), in coordination with Web and IT teams;
  • Manages relationships with external vendors and supervises the production schedules and work of designers (interactive, web, UX) and developers (web, mobile) in the development and production of interactive, visual communications and digital products;
  • Provides guidance to field offices on interactive and digital communications standards, tools, and trends;
  • Researches latest digital trends in communications space and conceptualize creative opportunities for digital innovation.

Impact of Results:

The results have a significant impact in strengthening UN Women’s coordination mandate through targeted knowledge-gathering, distribution and visibility of the UN system’s work on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The results have an impact on the visibility of UN Women’s priority areas through targeted development and use of digital products to best profile women’s rights.

  • Sound knowledge of front-end development (HTML and CSS). Knowledge of JavaScript, modern JS libraries, visualization and interactive software, a plus;
  • Sound knowledge of women's issues.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Master or equivalent degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Arts, Web Design, Graphic Design, or Digital Marketing.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience with website production and maintenance, digital media production and management, design, digital project management and communications at the national or international level.

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English (written and oral);
  • Knowledge of French and Spanish is an asset.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
