Antecedentes

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) leads and supports the organization in cultivating, building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for advancing and successfully achieving the mission of UNDP. Within BERA, the Communications Group leads and manages external communications through strategy, media, digital communications, marketing, branding and global storytelling. The Media & Advocacy Team in the Communications Group leads on strong media outreach, public events, and other multimedia advocacy tools. The Team is responsible for news, story and photo/video/multimedia production and celebrity management, helping to raise UNDP’s global profile and strengthen UNDP’s positioning among key donors, partners, policymakers and public audiences.

The Communications Specialist is part of the Media & Advocacy Team. Reporting to the Media and Advocacy Manager, he/she is responsible for positioning UNDP’s work in priority areas worldwide through mainstream media, multimedia and social media platforms, with a special emphasis on garnering coverage in elite international media outlets. He/she is responsible for drafting and editing communication materials. He/she is responsible for developing and implementing global campaigns and press launches in coordination with relevant offices. He/she is also responsible for supporting communication initiatives positioning the Administrator and senior staff and positioning UNDP experts in the media. He/she is involved in the public information aspects of managing reputational risk.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Facilitate UNDP’s positioning in the international media:

  • Develop and maintain close working relations with media outlets and identify opportunities for UNDP experts for media placement;
  • Organize, provide support and arrange broadcast and print media interviews for UNDP experts;
  • Plan and implement communication steps to place UNDP in international media outlets;
  • Help to shape messages and stories and pitch them to journalists and editors;
  • Help to organize and coordinate journalist trips to UNDP projects and be available to travel periodically to accompany journalists or on content gathering trips; and
  • Propose, edit, draft and pitch op-eds, letters to the editor, and other written, digital, and broadcast commentary.

Contribute to developing and implementing UNDP’s media relations plans including:

  • Initiate, draft, edit communications materials, including press kits, fact sheets, infographics and multimedia products;
  • Organize press events and position UNDP senior staff in press launches;
  • Work across the organization with policy and regional experts to identify media moments, develop and implement relevant materials and media outreach;
  • Work with social media team to draft messages for social media platforms; and
  • Generate innovative ways to gain quality media coverage across all channels.

Support UNDP outreach to international media from regions and country offices:

  • Collaborate with Regional Bureaux and Regional Communication Advisors to identify potential stories for media placement in international media;
  • Identify opportunities for report launches and other media moments with relevant regional bureaux;
  • Identify opportunities for, pitch and facilitate interviews by Regional and Country Office leadership and policy and program experts to broadcast, print and online international media;
  • Coordinate international media work when emergencies happen and support affected country offices on communications and media work;
  • Provide communication support to Regions and Country Offices as needed; and
  • Provide media training and knowledge sharing with UNDP staff.

Reputational Risk Management:

  • Monitor media for potential reputational risk issues;
  • Read and summarize audit and evaluation reports, identify potential reputational risk issues;
  • Contribute to drafting risk management responses; and
  • Coordinate risk management responses across different bureaux and teams and faciliate timely collaboration and sign off.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Advanced degree in relevant field of communications, journalism, social science, or related field.
  • First degree acceptable with 7 years of experience in relevant field of communications and/or journalism.

Experience:

  • 5 years of work experience required in the field of media relations and/or journalism;
  • Proven network of relevant international journalistic contacts required;
  • Proven ability to shape messages and stories for media placement and demonstrated track record of success in garnering earned media required;
  • Proven ability to work on deadline;
  • Experience working for or closely with an international news outlet preferred;
  • Multimedia production skills an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Fluency in another UN language is an asset.
