UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. 

Unit/ Project Background:
With over seven years managing programming in Liberia, UN Women leads the United Nations Country Team on gender equality and the empowerment of women. In line with the implementation of the UN One Programme in Liberia, UN Women will begin implementation of its 2015 planned activities in line with its 2014 – 2017 Strategic Plan, supporting gender equality priorities in the Government’s Agenda for Transformation in the following impact areas: 1. Women’s leadership and political participation; 2. Women’s economic empowerment; 3. Women, peace and security; and 4. Gender responsive governance. The national reaction to EVD is within UN Women’s scope under humanitarian response.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Description of Responsibilities:

Under the overall guidance from the UN Women Deputy Country Representative and direct supervision of the UN Women Team Lead, Women’s Political Participation Deputy Representative in Liberia, the Technical Advisor will provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social protection by undertaking the following tasks:

  • Provide support to the Political Participation pillar on gender interventions across sectors, with major focus on women participation in elected offices (in line with upcoming general elections);
  • Support processes to undertake formative research, and in close collaboration with stakeholders including developing evidence-based behavior change communication strategies and tools;
  • Support the capacity building of staff/stakeholders including women groups and networks on advocacy and delivery of initiatives for aspiring women candidates – including on other gender-related topics at all levels;
  • Support information sharing between UN Women and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and other relevant stakeholders in regards to the various thematic areas as they relate to gender and the empowerment of women;
  • Provide assistance in documenting lessons learned in gender integration in electoral processes. 

Deliverables: 
Provide support to the Team Leader in the implementation of the Gender and Elections Strategy – including organizing and coordinating various initiatives such as workshops, meeting, consultation and documentation.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in Public Administration, Public Policies, International Development, International Relations or related fields (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. 

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women. 

Application Information:

  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

Note: 

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
