Antecedentes

The Office of Communications of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York is interested in enrolling a terminology intern to assist its Communications Group Language Specialist within the Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA). This is the opportunity for translation graduate students to learn the translation and terminology process within an international organization and help the UN’s leading development agency better serve its constituents through the provision of high-quality translations.

The interested candidate will assist the Language Specialist to:

  • Build and update terminological databases, translation memories and glossaries of technical terms;
  • Provide feedback and guidance in terminology usage;
  • Contribute ideas to translation and terminology process;
  • Ensure quality of translations.

Required Skills and Experience:

Education:

  • Enrollment in a university degree programme in translation, linguistics or literature;

Candidate must either be:

  • Enrolled in graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher).
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • A university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one year of graduation. 

Experience:

  • Any relevant work experience in interpretation, localization, translation and publishing would be an advantage.

Language:

  • Native fluency in French, Spanish or Arabic;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required;
  • Knowledge of another language is an asset.

Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following :

  • Duly completed UNDP Internship Application form;
  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Copy of school transcript or copy of the University degree;
  • Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student’s performance;
  • A brief paper setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.

Note:

  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
  • UNDP terminology interns can work remotely. 

If working in-house:

  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed; 
  • Interns are not eligible to apply, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
