Background

UNDP’s overall communications activities will grow considerably in the coming years and, within this context, the incumbent will be responsible for enhancing UNDP’s multi-lingual corporate web site and for all aspects of internal communications, including the corporate Intranet. He/she will have ongoing responsibility for delivering two major service lines – 1) Management of UNDP’s corporate Web Strategy, including the adoption of cutting-edge multi-media elements; 2) Internal Communications and UN communications coordination. The Section Chief will be responsible for supervising an integrated team of web specialists, internal communications officers and a project manager.

Under the supervision of the Director of Communications and in close collaboration with the Deputy Director and other Section Chiefs, the Chief, Corporate Online Communications and Multi-media strengthens UNDP’s online branding and positioning across a wide-variety of online platforms, including the corporate website in three languages (English, French, Spanish), Country Office sites, partner sites and social networks. He/She will be responsible for enhancing the quality of UNDP’s corporate website, ensuring solid editorial content and leveraging all the available technologies to expand the reach of UNDP’s core messages on the web. This will include the increased use of video, photo and audio products.

The incumbent will also have to ensure that UNDP’s regional and country websites follow the best available practices in terms of transparency and accessibility.

In addition, the Section Chief will be responsible for the implementation of a single Content Management System for the corporate website as well as for country office websites.

He/She will be available to provide strategic advice to senior management to promote a culture of internal communications across every level of UNDP.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of key functions:

  • Oversees UNDP’s multilingual online presence, ensuring solid editorial content and increased use of multi-media tools;
  • Manages the provision of online support and evaluation to Country Offices, HQ units and regional bureaus
  • Upgrades UNDP presence on social networking sites;
  • Provides senior UNDP management with strategic advice, planning and implementation around internal communications priorities, liaising and obtaining buy-in from internal and external stakeholders.

Oversees UNDP’s multilingual online presence, ensuring solid editorial content and increased use of multi-media tools

  • Supervises corporate website maintenance and upgrade directly (www.undp.org, www.undp.org/french, www.undp.org/spanish);
  • Works in close collaboration with the External Communications Team, the Communications Services Team and the TV Unit to fully leverage multi-media to produce corporate publications and feature news stories for the corporate website.
  • Ensures the procurement and implementation of a new corporate Content Management System for the organization;
  • Manages the provision of online support and evaluation to Country Offices, HQ units and regional bureaus;
  • Enhances corporate website standards by sharing best practices and lessons learned.Oversees all “Balanced Scorecard” exercises.

Manages UNDP presence on Social Networking websites

  • Ensures that UNDP is active on a wide-array of social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn etc);
  • Works closely with Regional Communications Advisors to ensure UNDP presence in a wide variety of additional social networks.

Responsible for UNDP Intranet homepage and provides strategic advice to senior UNDP management on internal communications issues.

  • Manages corporate Intranet homepage (leading a team that plans navigation, receives and edits submissions, posts, tracks, etc).
  • With the support of the team, produces regular communications to staff on internal UNDP news, distributing to all staff in English, French and Spanish;
  • Facilitates internal communications with Senior management on behalf of Administrator and using corporate tools like senior management email networks;
  • Manages the global internal newsletter and provides other internal communications support to the Executive Office.

Manages new and innovative partnerships for UNDP and in tandem with other UN agencies development partners.

  • Responsible for the implementation of the “Google Project” linking the intranets of all UN agencies
  • Responsible ensuring corporate support and managing new and innovative on-line initiatives in support of UNDP’s development agenda.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

  • Master's degree in communications, journalism or a related field

Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy, including significant experience with multi-media platforms.
  • Previous experience with a multilateral or international organization is helpful but not mandatory.

Languages

  • Fluency in both written and spoken English.  Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
