Background

UNIFEM is the women's fund at the United Nations. It is established in 1976, it provides financial and technical assistance to innovative approaches aimed at fostering women's empowerment and gender equality. Today the organization's work touches the lives of women and girls in more than 100 countries. UNIFEM serves as a catalyst to ensure mainstreaming women rights in policy and programs levels, as well as it plays an innovative and a catalytic role in the UN system making the voices of women heard at the United Nations - to highlight critical issues and advocate for the implementation of existing commitments made to women.
In line with fulfilling UNIFEM's strategic objectives, UNIFEM Arab States' program focuses on three main areas, strengthening women's political participation, ending violence against women and ensuring women's economic security and rights in the region.
Engendering governance and leadership to increase women's participation in decision-making processes that shape their lives, continues to be a priority of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) in its Strategy and Business Plan. The emphasis on engendering governance and leadership is particularly critical for strengthening the capacity and skills of women to facilitate their access to political and economic decision-making positions and to support their development as transparent, accountable, transformational leaders, who can effectively advance a pro-poor and pro-women agenda.

The Women's Political Leadership and Economic Empowerment for Peace Building Program is a two-year (2009-2010) initiative that aims to enhance the engagement of socially excluded women in conflict resolution and innovative peace-building activities in the region through building women and youth solidarity for peace, supporting creative solutions to conflict-prevention, and supporting women's economic engagement and political participation at the local level.
