Background

The primary aim of this project is to ensure sustainable management of marine resources of the Mauritius and Rodrigues where various socio-economic activities take place. A considerable number of fishers depend on the few remaining resources of these ecosystems. Years of excessive exploitation and destructive fishing methods have lead to a degradation of marine habitats. The newly gazetted Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the south East region of Rodrigues has been created to mitigate human pressure on the marine environment and ensure appropriate co-management practices, community base participation and sustainable use of existing resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and the Project Analyst, the intern will undertake the following tasks at the
  • Project Management Unit (PMU) of the South East Marine Protected Area (SEMPA) in Rodrigues:
  • Day-to-day implementation and monitoring of the various PMU activities
  • Assist with ecological monitoring, data entering and analysis of the lagoon surveys
  • Support the PMU with the various community participation activities
  • Research partners and donors for the long term economic sustainability of the SEMPA
  • Perform additional assignments as requested by the project manager and analyst
  • Must be available to conduct an internship for at least 6 months
 
NOTE: The intern will cater for his/her own flight to Rodrigues, full medical insurance and living expenses for the enire duration of the internship. The UNDP Mauritius office will not provide any allowance.

Competencies

  • Fluency in English is required, Fluency in french is a strong advantage
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Initiative and sound judgment
  • motivated and adaptable in challenging situations
  • Scuba diving license and Geographic Information System (GIS) skills would be an asset

Required Skills and Experience

  • The intern must a be enrolled in a Masters program. Preferably studying Marine Biology, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Conservation or related field
