Background

The UN Dispensary Doctor will attend to the UN Dispensary on a full time basis and provide medical services to staff members and their dependents.  In addition, he/she will facilitate for medical evacuations where necessary.  The UN Dispensary Doctor is responsible for the day to day running of the UN Dispensary and he/she manages the UN Dispensary staff and ensures consistent delivery of high quality medical services to the UNCT.  The UN Doctor will also be responsible for medical examinations of staff, a responsibility he/she will share with other designated UN Physicians.
 
The UN Dispensary Doctor is supervised as follows:  For technical matters, by the WHO Representative and the UN Medical Director and for administrative matters, by the UN Resident Coordinator.  The incumbent carries out the above tasks in such a manner as to ensure healthy staff and their dependents, contributing to the reduction of staff absenteeism due to illness.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the medical supervision of the WHO Representative, the UN Medical Director and the overall management of the UN Resident Coordinator, the UN Dispensary Doctor will perform the following functions:

Ensures consistent delivery of high quality medical services to the UNCT by:

  • Maintaining medical records of all UN personnel and advise health precautionary steps to new staff members
  • Establishing good relations with reliable hospitals, private medical facilities and blood banks
  • Maintaining contact with UN Designated Examining Physicians to facilitate their availability as and when required
  • Facilitating medical evacuations authorised by the UN Medical Director, of UN Staff and their dependents in consultation with the Resident Coordinator, for further investigations and major treatment
  • Being on call during and outside office hours to respond to emergencies

Ensure timely procurement of the required medical supplies for the UN Dispensary by  ensuring the following:

  • Procurement and maintenance of an inventory of all vaccines, medicines, supplies and equipment
  • Replenishing of first aid kits and other essential medical supplies kept in other duty stations within the country
  • Maintenance of emergency medical supplies and equipment to be used in case of emergency situation

Provide medical advisory services to the UNCT by undertaking the following:

  • Prepare and send periodic (quarterly) reports of functions, visits and treatments at the UN Dispensary to the UN Medical Services.
  • Advise health precautionary steps to be undertaken at the duty stations

Perform any other duties as considered necessary by the WHO Representative, the UN Medical Director and/ or the UN Resident Coordinator, the UN Dispensary Doctor

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Medical Degree registrable with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe

Experience:

  • At least 7 years’ post internship experience as a medical practitioner in a recognised medical facility.  Experience in a tropical environment, emergency care and in family medicine would be an asset.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office.

Language Requirements:

  • English as a working language; knowledge of other UN working languages will be an asset.
