Background

The UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women ("the UN Trust Fund") was established by General Assembly Resolution 50/166, with UNIFEM (part of UN Women) as its Administrator. The UN Trust Fund is a leading source of support for governments, women's groups, civil society organizations and UN Country Teams working to address the global pandemic of violence against women and girls.
 
A website is now being developed for the UN Trust Fund. It will serve as a key channel for visibility for the UN Trust Fund and provide information on its grants to the public as well as act as a source of resources to grantees, donors and partners.
 
Under the overall supervision and guidance of the UN Trust Fund Manager, and in close collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Reporting Specialist and the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist, the consultant will be responsible for the maintenance of the UN Trust Fund web content. This will require research into media stories as well as active engagement with the UN Trust Fund team and grantees to develop a range of multilingual communication materials. The work of the incumbent will result in a dynamic and active website that communicates effectively to target audiences and has a demonstrated increase in web presence over time.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Strategic planning
  • Prepare a web editorial plan that includes milestones, timeline, deadlines and budget based on an analysis of UN Trust Fund strategic objectives, and in consultation with the UN Trust Fund Reporting Specialist and the UNIFEM (part of UN Women) Communication and Web Team
  • Coordinate all aspects of the web editorial plan (planning, budgeting, implementing, monitoring, reporting); ensure plan is appropriately resourced in the overall UN Trust Fund budget; update plan as needed; provide regular updates on progress
  • Develop and apply editorial process and approval workflows in the web content management system, in collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist
 
2. Content writing and editing
  • Maintain the UN Trust Fund website with written and multimedia content that is clear, concise, vivid, and conveys key messages to target audiences
  • Ensure that all content is timely, accurate and compelling
  • Regularly prepare, write and edit new web content in consultation with the UN Trust Fund Reporting Specialist
  • Ensure review of web content drafts, incorporate feedback and get necessary clearance for final version
  • Edit final version of web content for good flow and readability
  • Ensure information on the mandate, history, governance, strategic directions, statistics, donors, partners, documents and reports on the activities on the Fund is regularly updated
  • Ensure information on annual call for proposals, application and appraisal process is regularly updated
  • Regularly produce human interest stories ("Stories from the Field") that give a "human face" to the work of the UN Trust Fund and its grantees
  • Produce grantee profiles with information on mandate, history and main projects; grant profiles with information on goals, strategies, and expected results; grant summaries and two-liners every time new grants are approved
  • Update grant profiles on a regular basis, according to the grantee reporting calendar, including with testimonies, knowledge products, case studies, human interest stories ("Stories from the Field"), picture/video/audio galleries
  • Liaise with the UN Trust Fund focal points in UNIFEM (part of UN Women) Sub-Regional Programme Offices and Country Offices, as well as with UN Trust Fund grantees, to obtain up to date web content, news stories, human interest stories ("Stories from the Field"), interviews, videos, photos, audio, etc; this should be done in close collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Reporting Specialist and the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist
  • Ensure information on the UN Trust Fund capacity development programme, its workshops, training manual (curriculum), tools for evidence-based monitoring and evaluation, case studies of promising practices and knowledge products are uploaded to the website; this should be done in close collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist
  • Produce blurbs on selected documents and knowledge products that will be made available to the public through the website
  • Develop and regularly update a space to engage visitors to take action in ending violence against women and girls that include links to sites with relevant statistics/info about VAW; tips on outreaching opportunities and tools such as talking points, power point slides, hand-outs, flyers on VAW; links to CEDAW, government sites, petitions, Say NO - UNiTE platform; links to the donation page, information about the fundraising campaign, a fundraising tool kit, and ideas for how people can raise money for the UN Trust Fund
  • Produce instructions on the use of online tools in close collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist
  • Research and organize all media clippings on UN Trust Fund grantees and ensure that the material is posted on website
  • Produce news stories about the work of the UN Trust Fund and its grantees
  • Provide editorial guidance and support to content production
  • Provide other drafting and editing support, including for press and media releases and other products, as requested, and in collaboration with the UNIFEM (part of UN Women) Communication Team
 
3. Content translation
  • Organize and send website content for translation
  • Liaise with French and Spanish translators to ensure French and Spanish site reflects the same content
 
4. Audio-visual
  • Regularly research for new photos and obtain copyright permission
  • Research/organize a photo database of UN Trust Fund and its grantees activities that can be used on website and elsewhere
  • Maintain the photo database, including logical filing and accurate metadate
  • Maintain the UN Trust Fund dedicated YouTube channel up-to-date; create playlists with videos from grantees
 
5. Content Upload and Management
  • Upload web content and photos through the Content Management System (CMS)
  • Liaise with the UN Trust Fund web team on technical issues of site, in close collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist
  • Regularly review website content, design and functionality to ensure updates are reflected; make recommendations to improve design and functionality and ensure quality implementation
  • Respond to occasional content related requests for support from visitors
 
6. Reporting
  • Analyze traffic statistics and report on a monthly basis relevant information
  • Establish and manage key performance indicators and review web metrics reports
  • Oversee user research and determine audience needs; act on audience feedback in close collaboration with the UN Trust Fund Knowledge Management and Information System Specialist
 
Deliverables and Timelines
 
Payments will be made on a monthly basis calculated on the basis of a maximum of 15 days (8 hour days) per month.
 
Payments will be made on the satisfactory delivery of the following products and the appropriate management of associated processes needed to achieve them:
  • Monthly review of statistics, milestones, partners, donors, donor contributions, FAQs, contact information, links to ensure the information is up-to-date
  • Monthly tracking of media clippings
  • 4 news stories per month
  • 3 human interest stories ("Stories from the Field") per quarter
  • Quarterly review of information in the "Capacity Development" section
  • Quarterly review of information in the "Take Action" section
  • 90 grant profiles updated every six months
  • 6 new photos for the landing page every six months; research, selection and organization of high resolution photos from grantees, UN Trust Fund missions and photo banks; research, selection and organization of videos from grantees
  • Annual call for proposals, application and appraisal process information once a year
  • 30 grant and grantee profiles, summaries and two-liners when new grants are approved (once a year)
  • Other drafting and editing support, when needed
  • One monthly analysis of web traffic reflecting a steady increase in visits (achieved through marketing strategy)

Required Skills and Experience

Education
  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in Communications, International Relations/Public Affairs, Journalism, Marketing, Political Science or other related disciplines
 
Experience
  • A minimum of five years (with Master's) or ten years (with Bachelor's) of relevant experience
  • Extensive experience around ending violence against women, women's human rights and/or gender equality, and demonstrated experience as writer, editor, analyst and/or researcher in these areas
  • Sound and extensive editorial production and workflow experience writing and editing for the Web
  • Experience within the United Nations is highly desirable
 
Language requirements
  • Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is desirable
