Background

The “Access to Justice Project” is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the Justice sector, and in accordance with the objectives, aims to perform the tasks allocated to strengthening the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law (FSL) through the revision of the curriculum and capacity building for staff and lecturers.
 
Within the framework of the ongoing democratic process, one of the strategic activities proposed under the project for 2011-2013 is to Strengthening the FSL through the hosting of high calibre professors/lecturers to teach at FSL.
 
The object is to deliver common law subjects in the LLB offered by FSL during the second semester of 2011.

Duties and Responsibilities

In consultation and collaboration with the Head of the Department of FSL and in accordance with the tasks outlined the Lecturer will:
  • Prepare lecture/tutorial notes, tutorial, assessment instruments etc. and identify appropriate resources available that are relevant to the subjects to be taught during the period of the assessment;
  • Teach one or two of the following subjects in the LLB program: Company Law, Intellectual Property Law and Administrative Law, Equity and Trust and Evidence;
  • Develop assignments, reports and exams on the respective subjects that are been taught;
  • Mark and give feedback on assignments, reports and exams to students according to rules and procedures of the FSL and the assessment policy and examination rules of the Maldives National University.
DELIVERABLES
All teaching materials, including lectures, assignments, exams and tutorials prepared for the subjects taught during the assignment are to be shared with the FSL in hard copy and/or electronic editable form.
 
DURATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING 
The time period envisaged is 4 months.
 
The Consultant will be contracted by UNDP, and will work under the direct supervision and will report to the Head of the Law Department of the FSL or his designate. The consultant will be based at FSL and will participate in all working meetings directly related to her/his activity.
 
Office space and office facilities will be provided at FSL as required. The FSL will provide the support and services in relation to academic and administrative matters.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
Minimum Masters Degree (LLM) from a recognized tertiary institution or an LLB degree from a common law country and a post graduate specialization in law.
 
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of teaching experience or lecturing at a tertiary institution. Experience in professional teacher/ training development in preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office Programs
 
Language:
Fluent in written and spoken English.
