Background

Aid Effectiveness
With the global landscape for financing for development rapidly shifting, the role of aid is changing significantly, with a growing number of donors, increasingly complex aid modalities and questions about both the quantity and quality of aid. With its global mandate and place in the UN system, UNDP is uniquely placed support programme countries to receive, manage and use aid to achieve their development goals as well as to have a strengthened voice in the global dialogue on aid governance. 
 
Main Service Areas:
  •  Ensure UNDP country offices are better equipped to support national counterparts in adapting to the evolving development assistance landscape and changing aid modalities;
  • Facilitation of programme countries' participation in global and regional dialogue;
  • Knowledge management and facilitation of a community of practice on aid effectiveness;

The Aid Effectiveness Team accepts on an annual basis a limited number of interns to provide support to the team’s operational and research activities. Currently, we are inviting applicants for the fall semester. The Aid Effectiveness team may also recruit interns at other times to meet the office's needs - an announcement will be posted on this website.

Objective: Internships offer a small group of outstanding graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP's work, support and learn operational work and become a part of a team. They are designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, but also complement other international studies, including law.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research support and provision of substantive input with policy research and analysis in response to programme needs.
  • Support Policy Specialists with administrative and operational tasks (editing, document management, assistance with workshop preparation) as required.
  • Operational Support as related to the team’s publications and communications products.

Competencies

Professional        
  • Demonstrated interest in the field of development; familiarity with International Development Cooperation and in particular current debates around aid effectiveness and the changing aid landscape would be a distinct advantage.
  • Solid analytical and writing skills(quantitative and qualitative skills in analyzing data);
  • Sound organisational skills and multitasking. Ability to self- prioritize;
  • Team spirit and self-motivation;
Organizational
  • Demonstrates integrity and fairness, by modeling the UN/UNDP’s values and ethical standards;
  • Promotes the vision, mission and strategic goals of UNDP;
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate level degree (Master’s in a development related discipline (law, economics, international development, political science, social science). Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible;
  • Language skills: written and spoken proficiency in at least one UN working language.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft office);

Financial issues: UNDP does not pay for internships. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

Further Career opportunities: The purpose of internships is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but, as mentioned, to complement an intern's studies.
