Background

UNDP Indonesia's mission is to be an agent for change in the human and social development of Indonesia. We aim to be a bridge between Indonesia and all donors as well as a trusted partner to all stakeholders. We work in four key areas of development: Governance Reforms, Pro-Poor Policy Reforms, Conflict Prevention and Recovery, and Environment Management, with the overarching aim of reducing poverty in Indonesia. Besides the four priority areas, UNDP Indonesia is also engaged in a variety of crosscutting initiatives focused on HIV/AIDS, gender equality, and information and technology for development.

Organizational Context

Under the direct supervi0sion of, and reporting to, the Head of the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Section, the Translator/Interpreter will ensure the efficient and timely translation of documents and simultaneous interpretation at the very highest level.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Functions / Key Results Expected

Key Functions:

  • Translate documents from English to Indonesian and vice-versa.
  • Provide simultaneous interpretation.
  • Undertake administrative work within CPRU.
  • Accompany and provide interpretation and translation in the both the field and office to staff and partners of CPRU. 

Impact of Results

  1. Provide simultaneous translation and/or interpretation from Indonesian into English and vice-versa to all related Programme Officers, Head of CPRU, and staff in the field offices at all designated formal and informal meetings. In the course of carrying out this task s/he will ensure that information exchanged in the course of interpretation and translations during these meetings is complete and free of distortion;
  2. Translate documents and data collected which are or relevance to the work of CPRU (i.e. Agreements, Project Documents, etc.) and its counterparts (i.e. Bappenas, Setneg, etc.);
  3. Translate articles designated important to the work of the CPRU and other units within UNDP as needed;
  4. Accompany the Head of CPRU, Programme Officers, Consultants on visits to the project fields area or other locations to interpret during the conduct of interviews;
  5. Accompany and provide interpretation and translation to all related CPRU missions during assessments, fact finding or other work-related trips within, and when necessary, outside the Province;
  6. Assist in and facilitate contacts between the Head of CPRU or other relevant UN staff based in, or visiting the field office, and other parties as deemed necessary in the course of the work of the CPRU;
  7. Assist in making contacts, setting up meetings and facilitating transactions between the CPRU and any other parties;
  8. Assist in the administration of the work of the CPRU, especially during times when relevant administration staff are not available;
  9. Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Head of CPRU deemed necessary and/or important for the efficient running of the CPRU. 

 

Competencies

  • Experience in translation and/or interpretation work.
  • Experience gained for working in the UN is an advantage.
  • Experience translating Government and UN formal documentation is a significant advantage.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and relevant software (word processing, database, desk publishing,spreadsheet).
  • In view of the specific nature of the work of the CPRU and the context of complex emergency in which is conducted, the incumbent should be willing to.
  • Able to learn specialized vocabulary and technical terms related to issues of concern to the CPRU in order to ensure accuracy in interpretation and translation.
  • Network of translators and interpreters.
  • Able to undertake travel as required.
  • Able to, when required, work long hours.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Minimum Diploma certificate  in social sciences, social work, or languages, however Bachelor (S1) is desirable . certified translator is an advantage.


Experience:

  • Minimum experience for D2 : 6 years, D3: 5 years and Bachelors degree: 4 years in the related fields; work experience within the UN system and emergency situations an asset.


Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in both English and Bahasa Indonesia. Knowledge of other languages an advantage.
