Background

The Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator’s Office (RCHC-O) in Jordan supports the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in providing strategic directions to the UN Country Team (UNCT), coordinating joint initiatives, and pooling the financial and human resources of the UNCT in the most efficient and effective manner.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Head of Office , and as the Chair of the UN Communications Group, the Communications Analyst supports the implementation of the UN Joint communications strategy, promotes communication and information sharing amongst staff in the UN system in Jordan, as well as strategically guides the design, management and implementation of the UN website, communication and publication material which are geared to promote the development and humanitarian agenda promote public and media outreach and mobilize political and financial support for UN System in Jordan.

The Communications Analyst leads the UN Communications Group in the development of work plans, the implementation of activities, and the development of reports, articles and press releases/statements.. The Communications Analyst maintains a close working relationship with other UN working groups, UN agencies at large, UNDG’s HQs staff (Communications Office) and Government officials, international and local media, subject matter experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UN communication strategy implementation

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions: Planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach Implementation of the UN Jordan communications strategy Supervision of the design and maintenance of the UN Jordan web site, intranet, CO web-based knowledge management system Support to business development Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing

Ensures planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach focusing on achievement of the following results: Preparation and conduct of communications needs assessments for for the UN System in Jordan (events, training/learning, projects and programmes and, etc) Drafting/editing of UN communications and outreach strategy based on the corporate communications strategy. Analysis of requirements and synthesis of proposals on ways to integrate advocacy and communication strategies into all aspects of UN development programme during programme formulations.

Ensures implementation of the UN Jordan publications strategy and plan focusing on the achievement of the following results: Implementation of the UN Jordan publications strategy and plan, based on the corporate publications policy. Identification of storylines for publications and drafting of substantive articles contributing to debates on key development issues. Coordination and management of UN Jordan publication activities, such as content management, norms for publishing, design, etc. Contact with printers and other suppliers to ensure production and ensure publications dissemination.

Supervision of the design and maintenance of the UN Jordan online communication channels, social media, web site, intranet, CO web-based knowledge management system focusing on achievement of the following results: Supervision of the design and maintenance of the office web sites based on corporate requirements in cooperation with the ICT staff. Preparation of the content for the web sites to ensure consistency of the materials. Preparation of the content for the UN Jordan social media channels.

Launches and campaigns

Promotion and maintenance of public information campaigns on UN System activities, UN Reform, results of MDGs and Post-2015 Development Agenda, in association with other. Promotion and dissemination of corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications such as the Human Development Report. Packaging and submission of programme initiatives for donor briefs in collaboration with the RC/RCO, Chair of the UNCG, and UN Heads of Agencies.

Outreach Maintenance of increased coverage and understanding of the UN Jordan work in the country or practice area through regular media contacts and provision of newsworthy information to national public and, where possible, donors. Organization of roundtable discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, interviews, launches, etc. Forging of a “one UN” image through publicizing the significance of local UN reform efforts, joint programmes, common services. Organization and implementation of joint UN information campaigns (UN Day, World AIDS Day, etc.) Ensured access for journalists to subject matter experts within the UN system in Jordan, regionally and, if need be, in HQ. Drafting/production of regular newsletter to donors as applicable. Prepare civic education and community awareness to support the work of the UN in Jordan

Public information Effective responses to inquiries for public information to support the work of the UN in Jordan Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and management focusing on achievement of the following results: Identification and analyze best practices and lessons learned directly linked to UN programming and activities. Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories. Provision of training, consultancy and advice to UN Jordan staff on communications for development

Required Skills and Experience

Education: Degree equivalent to a Master's degree or Bachelor’s Degree in media relations, journalism, publishing

Experience: 5 years of relevant experience (7 years with a Bachelors’) at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy. Previous experience with a multilateral or international organization is helpful but not mandatory. Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems.
