Background

The Government of Bangladesh ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1984 with initial reservations to 4 articles. Later on, reservations to 2 articles were withdrawn during the presentation of its third and fourth periodic reports in July 1997. While the reservations to two more articles are still holding, in 2000, Bangladesh was one of the first 10 countries to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention.
UNIFEM has been active in supporting the member states to implement CEDAW obligations and its monitoring in various countries of the South Asia region since 1999 bringing together South Asian governments, the civil society and the CEDAW Committee members as stakeholders. UNIFEM Bangladesh office initiated the CEDAW component in its programme since August 2007.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.        Coordinate and assist in the smooth functioning and development of the CEDAW component of the work
2.        Assist the Programme Manager on all programme and administrative issues by providing necessary inputs into the programme and its management
3.        Keep track of the programme budget and prepare the periodic review of the programme
4.        Establish mechanisms for liaising with all donors as well as to the South Asia Regional Office
5.        Liaise with partners and stakeholders on behalf of UNIFEM as and when necessary
6.        Coordinating all studies undertaken in this regard
7.        Supervising all publications on CEDAW during this period ( e.g., booklets on thematic issues, synopsis of reports etc)
8.        Prepare financial and programmatic report for SARO website update and annual reporting mechanisms to match with the larger SARO work on CEDAW
9.        Perform any other work assigned as and when required

Required Skills and Experience

Education: Bachelordegree or equivalent  in Gender Studies, Law , or any Social Science disciple.   
 
Work Experience:
·          At least 3-5 years of work experience in programme and administrative support preferably 1-2 years within the UN/International organisation
 
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Good knowledge of gender issues and women’s rights
  • Good programme, administration and monitoring abilities
  • Excellent computer skills, with advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and familiarity with Internet is essential
  • Good drafting and writing skills
  • Ability to work in a team
 
Language
Excellent knowledge of English and good understanding of  Bangla.
