Background

This position is for a project associate to provide programme/ research support within the context of the Arab Initiative to Build National Capacity to Combat Human Trafficking in the Arab Region (XAMX59) that aims at empowering regional capacities to cover a wide spectrum of activities aiming at effective combating of human trafficking. This will be done through a) promoting and establishing successful regional Networks in order to improve and strengthen institutional mechanisms on the regional level; b) promoting the ratification and implementation of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children (Trafficking in Persons Protocol); c) strengthening the institutional and human capacities of criminal justice systems; d) improving mechanisms for the appropriate identification referral, support, and protection of trafficked victims and e) raising the awareness about the crime and its devastating consequences on individuals and societies at large.

This position is located in the UNODC Office for the Gulf Region. The incumbent

will report directly to the Programmes Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programmes Coordinator and the overall guidance of the UNODC Representative in the Gulf Region, the incumbent will fulfill the functions of a Project Associate, providing analytical and research  backstopping to this project through undertaking the following:           

1. Support the implementation of project activities for the timely and realistic achievement of project objectives, including through:

  • Substantive backstopping of activities envisaged under the project and provision of technical expertise;
  • Develops and implements, as assigned, technical assistance activities, against trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, with special focus on Criminal justice actors and victim service providers;
  • Provides training on Criminal justice actors and victim service providers and develops related technical material;
  • Develops cooperation mechanism between civil society and criminal justice actors on protection and assistance services for victims and/or witnesses in cases related to human trafficking in place in a number of the beneficiary countries;
  • Contribute to the overall development and implementation of the programme framework of the Gulf countries as required, particularly in the area of enhancing regional and international cooperation in combating organized crime and terrorism, including the provision of expertise, contribution to capacity building and technical assistance to the national counterparts;

Fulfill any other duties assigned by the supervisor

 

2. Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs on related thematic topics, including:

  • Background papers, analytical notes, correspondence with governments, working papers, mission reports, mission of meeting, presentations, project proposals and ad hoc reports and support the occasional translation of short written outputs and communication from English to Arabic and vice versa on an ongoing basis .

Required Skills and Experience

Education:University degree in international relations, political science or related fields.
Experience:3 to 5 years of relevant administrative experience is required at the national or international level. Experience with the UN is an asset. Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web based management systems


Language Requirements:Fluency in English and Arabic.
Computer Skills:Excellent computer and word processing skills.
