Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ethiopia Country Office is strengthening its engagement and focus on Sustainable Development of  Protected Areas. As a knowledge organization, it hopes to upscale or replicate Project Best practice related to Protected Area Management.

The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority is responsible for the management of 13 National Parks and wildlife sanctuaries, administers the hunting industry and fulfils regulatory functions.  With the Sustainable Development of the Protected Area System of Ethiopia (SDPASE), GEF/UNDP supports capacity building in EWCA and the wildlife sector as a whole. One of its expected outcome of the project is the replication of good practices across the protected area estate. SDPASE has developed best practises since its inception in 2008, however, a systematic compilation is deemed necessary to upscale /replicate in other Protected Areas.

This assignment is therefore, required to document the  five ongoing protected areas ( Siemen Mountain, Nechesar, Sinkile, Aledege and Awash National Parks) successful practices which can be replicated and or up scaled and for l lessons and experience sharing.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main objective of the study is:

To assist the UNDP country office  and  EWCA to  collect, synthesize and document  best practices of   five  National  Parks: the  Semien Mountain, Nechesar, Sinkil, Aledege and Awash National Parks of  the Sustainable Development of Protected Area (SDPA) project which can be replicated and or  up scaled outside the  Protected Areas or in other areas within and outside Ethiopia  for  lessons and experience sharing.

The documentation work will:

  • Conduct desk reviews of relevant documents and interview, focused group discussion with EWCA and UNDP Country office;
  • Conduct site visits to protected areas, interview, focused group discussion with beneficiary communities and relevant EWCA and other government officials at the project sites to synthesize and document project best practices;
  • Document the projects best practices and synthesis of  project progress to be replicated and or up scaled outside the Protected area or in other areas within and/or outside Ethiopia and for lessons and experience sharing;
  • Prepare ten short “story telling”   article (two stories for each protected areas) by interviewing sample project beneficiaries.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in Agricultural Economics, Ecology, Natural Resources or Environment Management, Natural or Environment Sciences, or development studies with environment specialization.

 Experiences:

  • At least seven years working experience developmental communication, documenting synthesized storytelling and documenting best practices;
  • Proven experience in assessment studies and excellent knowledge of documenting project best practices, programme design, research, policy analysis, policy brief and synthesis;
  • Able to provide/submit evidence of her/his research or analytical products/sample;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of report writing, proficiency in English language and computer-literacy (MS Office);
  • Computer skills: full command of Microsoft applications (word, excel, PowerPoint) and common internet applications will be required.

 Language:

  • Excellent knowledge of  English, including the ability to set out a coherent argument in presentations and group interactions.
