Background

The Gender Specialist will contribute to management and implementation of the Gender Equality Strategy at the Regional Level and provide substantive analytical policy and technical input towards mainstreaming gender across UNDP’s core practices and supporting gender equality and women’s empowerment in dedicated interventions. The Gender Specialist is responsible for supporting the Gender Practice Team Leader with regard to quality assurance on development effectiveness, gender seal process and organizational effectiveness across the Gender Team. The Gender Specialist will report to the Gender Practice Team Leader, Regional Center for Africa Addis Ababa/Ethiopia, and will work in close collaboration with other practices within the Regional Center, UNDP Regional Bureaus for Africa and UNDP BPPS in New York.

Summary of key functions:

  • Programme Management/Implementation: Provide effective support to the Gender Practice Team Leader in supporting country offices in implementation of the Gender Equality Strategy (30%);
  • Policy Advocacy and Advisory Services: Contribute to and lead initiatives to foster a deeper practical understanding of the integration of gender in programmes and practice areas of UNDP Arab States Country Offices (30%);
  • Knowledge Management and Learning: Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the region and Cos (20%);
  • Policy development, Gender Seal process (20%).

Hence, UNDP is seeking the services of an Individual Consultant who has the required expertise to provide her/his services on the captioned consultancy services. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Programme Management/Implementation: Provide effective support to the GPTL in programme implementation on the following results;
  • Policy Advocacy and Advisory Services: Contribute to and lead initiatives to foster a deeper practical understanding of the integration of gender in programmes and practice areas of UNDP focusing on the following results;
  • Knowledge Management and Learning Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing, focusing on achievement of the following results;
  • Policy Development.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent Advanced Degree in Gender, Rural and development, Women Empowerment, Peace Building, Law, Economics and other related field of expertise.

 Experiences:

  • A minimum of four years of paid working experience in a relevant field related with the assignment;
  • Experience in the area of gender and development;
  • Demonstrated development practice experience in the above skills areas, with demonstrated capacity to work at both policy as well as grassroots levels;
  • Computer skills: full command of Microsoft applications (word, excel, PowerPoint) and common internet applications will be required.

 Language:

  • Working knowledge of English or French;
  • Other working knowledge language requirements, if applicable: other region languages an asset.
