Background

The mandate of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has been defined by a number of United Nations General Assembly Resolutions, the most notable of which is “to serve as the focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster reduction and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations system and regional organizations and activities in socio-economic and humanitarian fields” (UN General Assembly Resolution 56/195).

The UNISDR Sub-Regional Office for the Pacific based in Suva, Fiji covers 18 countries (16 Pacific Island Countries and Territories and Australia and New Zealand). Its main roles are policy coordination, advocacy and information management at the international and regional levels, to ensure synergy between disaster reduction strategies and those in the socio-economic and humanitarian fields in particular the global Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.  It also implements a number of activities with the private sector such as small businesses and hotels in the region to build their resilience to natural hazards.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Pacific Sub-Regional Coordinator, UNISDR seeks to recruit suitably qualified Fiji national for the positions of Finance and Administrative Assistant (ICS-5) to be based in the UNISDR Sub-Regional Office for the Pacific, in Suva, Fiji.

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Provided efficient administrative support to the UNISDR Sub-Regional Office for the Pacific;
  • Ensured timely and efficient management of all financial and payment processes; including budget monitoring, procurement, financial reporting, and inventories;
  • Ensured smooth delivery of assigned human resource management functions, in particular as regards the recruitment of consultants.

  • Keeps abreast of available technology; seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Completion of secondary education is required;
  • First level university degree in business administration or a related field is desirable.

Experience:

  • 5 years of practical working experience in Financial, Technical Cooperation Planning and Implementation, Administration and Human Resources, and working knowledge of the United Nations systems would be added advantage;
  • Experience and knowledge in technical cooperation programme implementation;
  • Knowledge of the financial and staff rules and regulations of the United Nations are an asset.

Language:

  • For this post, fluency in English is essential with good writing ability;
  • Knowledge of other UN languages, in particular French, is an asset.
