The Climate Change, resilience and Energy programme has been assisting the government to address its national developmental and environmental priorities while meeting the obligations under the key multilateral climate change agreements. As one of the largest multilateral development agencies, with a pivotal role in engaging with the Government at national and sub-national level, UNDP is assisting the Ministry in developing capacities at the national and state level to develop, implement and monitor large scale climate adaptation and mitigation projects.

The intern will be responsible for supporting the National Programme Manager, CCRE in research and overall support on climate change issues.


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of National Programme Manager, Climate Change, Resilience and Energy, UNDP India the intern is expected to:

  • Review, document and prepare briefs for UNFCCC processes on issues related to climate change.
  • Provide necessary technical backstopping and research inputs for the preparation of position papers, knowledge products and related contexts.
  • Help facilitate various communication tasks related to programme, and develop a knowledge bank of relevant material related to climate change.
  • Provide support on implementation of activities under the ongoing climate change projects.
  • Provide support for organizing consultations with relevant stakeholders and prepare background material.
  • Support in overall coordination of activities under the partnership with Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change.
  • Shall also undertake any other related tasks as requested by UNDP.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher) on relevant subject such as Environmental / Climate Change Studies.  

(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent) on relevant subject such as as Environmental / Climate Change Studies.  

(c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above);

(d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program. 

Skills: 

  • Excellent understanding about climate change, international relations & negotiations in the Environmental field.
  • Good understanding on issues such as Climate Change, energy, international and national negotiation on climate change issues.
  • Experience of working with/ volunteering with research institutes/ civil society organisations on climate change research projects/
  • Ability to produce quality document with quick turnaround time.
  • Experience in writing blogs, features, articles & documenting gender specific case studies would be an asset.
  • Good team player and ability to adapt to change in work environment

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, while understanding of Hindi is desirable

Candidates who are selected must submit the following documents, upon selection: :

Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in their undergraduate or graduate-level degree programme;

Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out. Selected intern must have medical and life insurance.

Working arrangements:

Interns may be given a stipend according to UNDP Internship Policy, if it is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government foundation or scholarship programme. A stipend intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.

Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of the internship. UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. Interns must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan.

Interns are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for education programmes. 

The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship. 

Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity. 

The purpose of the internship is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.  The intern will be evaluated at the end of the internship.

IMPORTANT: Family relationships are required to be disclosed in order to avoid real or perceived family influence or conflict of interest, within UNDP. If the candidate/ hiring manager has not disclosed that he/she was related to an individual employed by UNDP in whatever contractual modality and irrespective of the nature of the family relationship, this may constitute a basis for withdrawing the offer of internship or, if the internship has started, to terminate it without notice or indemnity.
