Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; women’s empowerment; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women is leading and coordinating the United Nations System to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It is providing strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with the private sector, civil society, government, and other relevant actors.

UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025 focus on integrated approaches to address the root causes of inequality. One of the lessons learned from the past decade is the need to enhance partnerships providing a key comparative advantage for UN Women leveraging its role as a leading champion for women and girls at the centre of the global architecture of gender equality. UN Women has the ability to convene and support multi-partner platforms, strategies and dialogues between governments, civil society, and other stakeholders, and to use its global voice to build broad-based support for the gender equality agenda. UN Women is broadening and expanding existing partnerships, with a continuous increased focus on strengthened relationships with the private sector and the International Financing Institutions (IFIs), as well as think thanks and research institutions.
