Background

 

Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India have established Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs) to provide knowledge support to the institutions of tribal development and act as think tanks for tribal development, preservation of tribal cultural & heritage and promotion of tribal welfare. Further, TRIs are mandated to provide technical assistance to States for evidence-based planning; capacity building of the tribal people / institutions associated with tribal affairs; awareness generation on welfare measures and various development programmes; research and documentation etc. Presently, 26 TRIs have been established in various states across the country. Ministry of Tribal Affairs is taking numerous steps to strengthen the TRIs to deliver quality research and training outputs so that they can serve as a foundation to take tribal development programmes forward.

 

National level Tribal Research Institute (NTRI) has been established at Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) Campus to provide overall direction on the research and to provide handholding support to ensure they achieve their set objectives. NTRI will house an exhibition hall, an auditorium, conference hall, a library, laboratories, guesthouse and a multipurpose hall and will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring research studies being undertaken, and conducting trainings programmes/seminars for cross learning/ capacity enhancement

 

UNDP is providing technical assistance to the National Tribal Research Institute to strengthen the State Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs) to function as hubs of capacity building and knowledge on tribal development in their respective states.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Within the above scope, the intern will work under the guidance of the Special Director, National Tribal Research Institute and close consultation with National Programme Officer – System Strengthening, UNDP to carry out the following tasks:

  •  
  • Support in compilation and preparation of theme based database of the research studies undertaken by various State Tribal Research Institutes;
  • Support in drafting the synthesis of various research studies to feed into the preparation of research articles/papers;
  • Support in conduct of the meetings of Technical Advisory Group or other bodies constituted to guide and review the research work from quality and relevance perspective;
  • Support in organization of webinars/events to disseminate the research findings;
  • Handholding support in conducting research, compiling data and helping write papers
  • Support in conduct of research studies (quantitative and qualitative) in coordination with agencies/TRIs etc.
  • Support in preparation of research training materials, tool for the TRIs in different thematic areas;
  • Coordinate with State TRIs for undertaking interventions, organization of events, study tours.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned from time to time by the Supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher); Candidates with social work, development studies, development management, public policy, economics and other social science background are preferred

(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent); Candidates with social work, development studies, development management, public policy, economics and other social science background are preferred

(c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;

(d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.
