UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security

The Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships and Advisory Services section (MPAS) brings together UN Women’s multi-stakeholder initiatives through various partnership engagements. It convenes private sector partnerships and seeks to ensure that UN Women’s range of partnership vehicles and its National Committees are complementary and synergistic to achieve maximum impact for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Within MPAS, the Unstereotype Alliance (UA) is a thought and action platform that seeks to eradicate harmful gender-based stereotypes from advertising and media content. As a membership-driven initiative convened by UN Women, the Alliance is focused on empowering people in all their diversity (race, class, age, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, language, education etc.) and addresses the full gender spectrum including harmful masculinities to help create a gender equal world.

Reporting to the Head of the Unstereotype Alliance Secretariat, the Programme Specialist will oversee the UA’s National Expansion Programme (NEP) chapter strategy and activation initiatives. They will collaborate closely with Secretariat team, UN Women colleagues and UA Deputy Vice Chairs to oversee National Chapter activities, and ensure communications strategies, annual workplans, resource mobilization, event planning and coordination and other organizational outreach efforts are aligned and executed to meet the objectives of the Alliance. S/he also collaborates with Regional/Multi-country office, Country and Liaison Office colleagues as well as National Committees to support National Chapter expansion, recruitment, activation and education efforts. 

The duration of the assignment is for 364 days. Whereas an external candidate will be offered a temporary appointment, subject to release agreements, staff members in UN Women may be administered as a temporary assignment and staff members in the UN Common system may be administered under a loan arrangement.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Coordinate the development and implementation of the NEP strategic plan to support the objectives of the Unstereotype Alliance

  • Conduct research needs assessments for the UA’s NEP;
  • Design, develop, and implement the outreach/advocacy strategies, including member engagement, onboarding and media strategies;
  • Integrate communication, advocacy and outreach strategies into proposals for project/programmes and other initiatives;
  • Monitor and analyze overall programme results and add to UA reports;
  • Support countries in launching Unstereotype Alliance National Chapters.

Facilitate the development and dissemination of communications and advocacy materials to the UA national chapters

  • Consult with the Strategic Communications Specialist to develop communications materials (brochures, factsheets, stories from the field to inform UA members) for UA channels and media, as required;
  • Develop and produce communication and advocacy instruments and materials, including briefing materials, press releases, and articles and coordinate its dissemination as required through effective channels;
  • Identify and launch information opportunities, activities, approaches, platforms and partners;
  • Provide advice on advocacy materials and coordinate launching flagship initiatives and publications in the region.

Foster and maintain partnerships and relations with national chapter focal points and members

  • Collaborate in identification and development of partnerships and alliances to enhance visibility, manage and nurture existing partnerships;
  • Assist with advocacy partners and undertake outreach to civil society organizations, governments, and other groups to ensure that newsworthy information reaches the public;
  • Guide and collaborate closely with communication colleagues in other offices to ensure consistency with corporate policies, messaging and initiatives;
  • Liaise with UN Women legal and finance colleagues to ensure consistent and appropriate procedures and administrative standards are observed across National Chapters;
  • Submit packages for programme initiatives for Member review.

Assist with the Unstereotype Alliance’s web / online presence for the National Expansion Programme

  • Provides strategic, tactical and operational support content on National Chapters on the UA global website and national chapter pages;
  • Assist the Digital and Social Campaign Consultant with facilitating social media content pertaining to National Chapters on UA channels.

Facilitate knowledge building and sharing across the national chapter membership, and integration with global members

  • Collate and synthesize best practices and lessons learned within the Membership directly linked to programme country goals and activities and ensure exchange of information.

Provide strategic guidance and facilitate coordination of NEP support personnel

  • Provide guidance to the NEP Support Consultant, with a clearly-communicated delineation of roles and responsibilities, performance indicators, and guidance for growth in the role.
  • Provide substantive input and support in project management of the UK and Australia national chapter focal points – countries without a UN Women office, where the focal point is employed directly by the UA Secretariat at HQ.
  • Provide guidance and preliminary prospective member assessment including support with Due Diligence for the capacity-challenged chapters. 
  • Support or act as temporary Focal Point by providing ongoing direct member support to several chapters -as needed.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Provides strategic, tactical and operational support to established national chapters (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Kenya, India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Turkey, South Africa, the UAE and the UK) to ensure membership objectives are achieved across the NEP.
  • Devises the strategy and initiates outreach for the next expansion phases of the NEP, including China in 2022, and the pipeline for 3 additional chapters in 2023.
  • Develops and implements briefing and engagement strategies to ensure national chapter participation in Unstereotype Alliance events (Global Member Summit, international and national advertising awards, AdWeek New York, monthly all-member meetings, weekly check-in meetings with partners and National Chapters).
  • Ensures national chapter members support and engage in the UA’s first global B2C public awareness campaign, launching in October 2022.
  • Develop future strategy for the NEP, with clear protocols for selection of pipeline countries and projected growth over time, and a scaled management plan to accommodate this

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education and certification:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 5years of professional work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy, including in media relations;
  • Experience in managing a member engagement programme across a global network.
  • Experience in managing private sector engagement strategies.
  • Experience in knowledge management tools and systems.
  • Experience in marketing, advertising or media relations is an asset.
  • Experience in communications production, messaging strategies and media outreach at a local level is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Written and oral fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.
