Additional building projects on the UN Campus are planned to a further consolidation over the next several years.The common premises in Bonn are managed by UNV on behalf of the UN entities in Bonn.
The UNV organization
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.
The programme was established by the United Nations General Assembly (GA) in December 1970 through resolution 2659 (XXV). It began operations in January 1971, administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers, including experienced UN volunteers, throughout the world. UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement, and solidarity. Every year, more than 8000 world citizens serve the United Nations as UN Volunteers.
UNV is headquartered in Bonn, Germany and personnel works on the UN Campus in Bonn as well as in roughly 60 offices at the regional and country level.
The UNV Executive Coordinator is appointed as Designated Official (DO) for Germany.
Organizational setting
The Common Services (CS) has responsibility for the overall management of the UN premises buildings and for services that are shared by the UN Agencies residing at the UN Campus in Bonn. The CS main business objectives are the upkeep of business continuity at the Campus facilities and its infrastructure as well as the provision of client services in the area of building management, logistics, conference services, shared ICT infrastructures and safety and security services.
The overall security management responsibility of the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany is assigned to the CS and its Security Team.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the UN Bonn Security Associate within the UN Bonn Common Services, the intern will support the Security Team as follows:
- Assist with the review and update of Security Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Provide conceptual support regarding the implementation of performance indicators, increase of data usage and visualization of data for operational usage
- Assist with the drafting of fire prevention and evacuation procedures and instructions, ensuring compliance with relevant national and UN policies, in collaboration with the UN Bonn Facilities Management and the UN Bonn organizations’ security focal points
- Support in updating the UN Bonn Campus Fire Warden Lists and sharing information with relevant users
- Support in the preparation of training material and presentations for UN organizations’ Fire Wardens
- Support of the procurement/solicitation process for rendering security services to UN Bonn
- Support the local definition and technical implementation of HQ standards for UN ID and access card procedures
- Assist with improving means and reporting of staff members and dependents for emergency communication requirements
- Support other assigned activities within the Security Team

Competencies
Fluency in English;

Required Skills and Experience
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree / programmein Security Studies, Disaster Response, Occupational Health, Business Administration, or a related field (Please note that only candidates who will be returning to their studies upon the completion of their internship qualify for an internship with UNV.) or
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in Security Studies, Disaster Response, Occupational Health, Business Administration, or a related field. (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or
- Have recently graduated with a university degree in Security Studies, Disaster Response, Occupational Health, Business Administration, or a related field. (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
- Strong interest in development cooperation and in the work of the United Nations
- Excellent oral and written communications skills as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. Knowledge of process visualization applications and other design applications would be an asset. Knowledge of BI applications and programming (Python, etc.) and data visualization would be a distinct asset.
- Fluency in English.
Interns are selected on a competitive basis.
Applicants to UNV internships must at the time of application meet one of the following academic requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
(c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
(d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.
General Terms and Conditions
- UNDP Conditions of Service for interns apply for interns working at UNV Headquarters.
- Where an intern is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation or scholarship programme, a stipend intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station, will be paid by UNV.
- The monthly amount of the stipend will be determined based on the stipend rates published yearly by the OHR Policy and Compensation Unit. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.
- The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNV but to complement an intern's studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
- UNV accepts no responsibility for the intern's medical insurance or for costs arising from illness during the internship. Interns are required to provide proof of medical insurance coverage.
- Only short-listed candidates will be contacted. Short-listed candidates may be requested to take a short-written test and/or interview.
