Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women in Georgia supports state and non-state partners towards the achievement of substantive gender equality in Georgia. In line with national and international commitments, UN Women works on the levels of policy and legislation, institutions and grassroots, in order to achieve transformative results for increased gender equality and greater protection of the rights of women and girls.

In April 2023 UN Women, with the generous support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) launched a four-year project “Women’s Increased Leadership for Democracy in Georgia” (WILD). The impact-level goal of the project is to ensure that women and girls in all their diversity fully and equally participate in decision-making and benefit from gender-responsive governance in Georgia. The project strives to strengthen the voice, leadership, capacities and agency of women and their organizations to engage in political life, influence decision-making processes at all levels and advocate for greater gender equality and inclusive development. The project further ensures that national laws, policies and practices are gender-responsive in line with Georgia’s international and national commitments and that they benefit women and men equally and promote women’s participation and leadership in decision-making in Georgia.
