Background

BPPS is leading the collaborative processes of policy development, applied research and programmes for Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States on ensuring macro-micro policy linkages of UNDP’s work on sustainable development. Work will cover the 32 LLDCs and 39 SIDS, with their own unique development challenges. This includes, in particular, follow-up to the Vienna Programme of Action for LLDCs and the Samoa Pathway for SIDS, and work with teams across UNDP’s Regional Hubs, COs and Global Policy Centres, development of substantive approaches, products and tools to support policy and programming services to UNDP Country Offices. 

Furthermore, BPPS will lead interactions with Permanent Missions to disseminate UNDP’s policy and programmatic offers, in close collaboration with the Regional Bureaux and BERA, gauging the interest and expanding strategic partnerships among Member States. 

The Samoa Pathway for SIDS (2014-2024) and the Vienna Action Plan for LLDCs (2014-2024) come to an end in 2024. The processes of formulating the new 10-year plans of action for SIDS and LLDCS have already started. They will culminate with the SIDS4 conference in Antigua and Barbuda (May 2024) and the LLDC3 conference in Rwanda (June 2024). 

Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the guidance of the Senior Advisor on LDCS, LLDCs and SIDS, the intern will provide research support for the preparation of inputs towards the knowledge products to be released during SIDS4 and LLDC3, in particular:

  • Support the compilation of existing knowledge products on best practices from UNDP projects addressing challenges specific to SIDS and LLDCs
  • Support the organization of high-level events in the lead-up to SIDS4 and LLDC3
  • Support to the preparation of inputs to UNDP messaging for SIDS4 and LLDC3
  • Support the preparation of inputs for side events during SIDS4 and LLDC3

Competencies

Required Competencies

  • Strong research, analytical, writing and editing skills, with track record in producing development research, articles and other material in English;
  • Strong interest in, and knowledge of, global development and the work of international organisations;
  • Demonstrated understanding of international development issues, including in the area if Agenda 2030 and SDGS
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals as a Team Player;
  • Good organizational and time management skills, attention to detail and proven ability to work independently under tight deadlines;
  • Capacity to work in a multicultural environment;
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision;
  • Good social media skills;
  • Strong verbal and writing communications skills in English. 

Advantageous Competencies

  • Knowledge of the UN/UNDP and commitment to UN mission and UNDP mandate is desirable;
  • Previous organisational experience or working experience in a developing country is desirable.

Education and Eligibility

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. Program in Communication, Public policy, or Social sciences;
  • Candidates who have graduated with a Master's or PhD level programme in Communication, Public policy, or Social sciences and must start the internship within one year of the graduation date.

Language

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; competency in other UN languages is a strong asset.

General Conditions of Internship and Working Arrangements

  • Interns may be given a stipend according to UNDP Internship Policy, if it is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government foundation or scholarship programme. The stipend is to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.
  • Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNDP, its officials and staff members.
  • Interns are not considered staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity. However, all relevant UNDP polices, such as policy on SH/SEA, are fully applicable to interns.
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.
  • Confidentiality and Publication of Information: Interns will respect the confidentiality of information that he/she collects or exposed to at UNDP.  No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNDP without the explicit written authorization of the Head of Bureaux or Office.
  • Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of the internship. UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. Interns must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan for the duration of the internship.
  • Passports and Visas: UNDP does not provide assistance with travel and/or housing and the Intern will be responsible for obtaining the passport including necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty stations where the internsip will be performed. UNDP can only issue a letter stating acceptance of an individual as an intern and the conditions governing the internship.
  • Interns will be responsible for providing his/her own laptop. Internet access and printing facilities will be available at UNDP during the internship.
  • The intern will be evaluated at the end of the contract.

Expected Duration

January 2024 to June 2024.  The start and ending dates are flexible. Please indicate availability in application materials. Internships last to a maximum of 6 months. Internship can be part time or full time, but full time preferred for this internship.

 

Selected candidates will be requested to submit the electronic version of the following documents prior to commencement of the internship.

  • Updated resume or curriculum vitae;
  • A letter from the University confirming current enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme and graduation date.  In the case of an applicant who graduated and must start the internship within one year of graduation, a copy of the applicant's diploma or a letter from the University confirming the graduate-level degree programme and graduation date;
  • Copy of passport;
  • Copy of his/her school transcript;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance coverage;
  • A letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member, who has directly supervised him/her in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with his/her performance, with a brief description (one page maximum) setting out the reasons why s/he is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.
