Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Bridging Project Leveraging sports for gender equality, human rights, and life free of violence, funded by the International Olympic Committee, aims at harnessing the power of sport to promote gender equality inside and inside the playing field. Women and girls, in all their diversity, have an extraordinary potential and capacity to contribute to the relevance and lasting success of sport, which often remains untapped due to the structural barriers, as well as the limited capacity and opportunities for women’s meaningful participation.

UN Women seeks, through the bridging project, to empower girls and young women by building their capacities and skills to articulate their needs and advocate for them with national and sub-national governments, Parliaments and sports and non-sport institutions. On the other hand, the project also aims at promoting gender equality in and through sports and increasing knowledge and capacities of State institutions, organizations from the sport and social ecosystem, and the media to strengthen their accountability for gender equality and human rights in policies, planning and budgeting.

UN Women ROAP will continue to go beyond traditional campaigning so that advocacy maintains its role and presence as a strong platform for UN Women’s voice and influence and utilize innovation and technology to develop campaigns and advocacy to address and harmful practices and social norms, including by engaging men and boys. In March 2022, UN Women ROAP launched the 30 for 2030 as a youth leadership network that brings together young decision-makers, eminent civic and business innovators, feminists, sports champions, entrepreneurs, technology pioneers, educators, activists, artists, journalists, and more. The 30 for 2030 thought leaders and experts are determined change makers to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda from a feminist perspective, break down gender barriers and make gender equality a working reality in their spheres of influence.
