This position is located within the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC), based in Bogotá, Colombia. The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the Associate Field Translator.

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Field Translator, the Service Contractor will undertake the following tasks:

  • Proofread, revise, and edit documents subject to translation, and as requested by direct supervisor.
  • Translate from Spanish to English and vice versa, subject to revision, a variety of texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, medical, and technical, meeting established workload and quality standards, while integrating a gender perspective, especially in relation to gender sensitive use of language.
  • Ensure final versions of source documents and translations conform to existing UNVMC editorial guidelines.
  • Uses United Nations terminology and style consistently and accurately.
  • Solve translation/editorial issues (i.e., clarification on ambiguities, technical meanings, etc.) in consultation with the Associate Field Translator.
  • Observe the established terminology and usage and ensures consistency with other translators working on similar documents.
  • Use all sources of reference, information, and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carries out any research required.
  • Have proven experience rendering translation using CAT tools.
  • Makes effective use of relevant language technologies and tools.
  • Maintains strict security and confidentiality of information.
  • Registers incoming/outgoing documents in order to control flow of work in and out of team.
  • Maintains daily statistics. Performs administrative work, as needed.
  • Performs daily maintenance of translation team’s network drives and logs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Outputs/Works assignment

  • Timely production of high-quality revisions/translations that accurately reflect the nuances of source texts as per internal translation and editorial manuals/guidelines.
  • Daily maintenance of translation and other editorial logs.

Expected Duration

  • Services will be for 8 months with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and compliance with and quality of work assignments.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • A first-level university degree in humanities (translation, languages, literature, or related field with an emphasis on English and Spanish) is required.
  • Scientific, technical or legal studies will be considered an asset.
  • Further translation studies or certifications (sworn/certified translation certifications, CAT tools licenses/certifications) will be considered an asset.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in translation in the fields above-mentioned is required.
  • Proven experience in the use of standard computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools is required.
  • At least one year of experience proofreading and editing documents and revising translations or working in self-revision is required.
  • Experience working within the United Nations or a similar international organization is desirable.
  • Experience rendering certified/sworn translations is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations.
  • Perfect command of Spanish and English and (oral and written) is required.

  • A translation examination and a competency-based interview will be administered to candidates who comply with the above requirements.
