Background

 

UNDP is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. UNDP's Inclusive Governance Team (IGT) is focused in working with the government agencies through the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Flagship SDG 16 Portfolio on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The portfolio aims to address governance deficits and strengthen the effectiveness of key institutions to deliver people-centered services and promote peace and reconciliation. It also aims to build the space, capacity, and trust for excluded and vulnerable groups (including women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs)) to participate in and inform policy and decision making, so that it meets their specific needs and interests.

The portfolio comprises of four inter-related outcomes/service lines, viz.

  1. Voice, Representation and Accountability - Participatory public space for policymaking is established to design equitable public services that reflect the principles of accountability, efficiency, inclusivity and responsiveness of governance mechanisms, including parliament.
  2. Rights and Justice - Justice sector in Sri Lanka reflects international standards related to access to justice, rule of law, integrity, and efficiency to promote better governance.
  3. Strong and Effective Institutions (National/Sub-national) - Effective, open, transparent public sector governance mechanisms, including anti-corruption and inclusive state institutions at all levels committed to deliver on the SDGs.
  4. Social Cohesion - State, non-state, and private sector institutions and structures effectively identify and respond to drivers of violent conflicts and build community resilience promoting peace, social cohesion, and stability. 

 

Position Context:

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Project Manager and the respective Technical Specialist, and Programme Associate, the intern will provide support to the unit and work in close collaboration with other IGT colleagues to support day-to-day administrative tasks such as data gathering, preparation of work plans, preparation of briefing notes, etc. The intern will have the opportunity to learn in the area of inclusive governance related projects. The intern will be based at the United Nations Compound in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Support the project team and project implementation partners in the efficient implementation of project activities.  
  • Support the project team with logistic and organizing requirements to deliver project activities such as project meetings, training programs, workshops and other project related tasks.
  • Assist in preparation of project communication products to capture best practices and lessons learned and raising visibility of the project(s).
  • Maintain project documents and files and ensure that the master files, have all required documents for contract management, (where appropriate with hard copies) which is mainly through the repository in the shared drive.
  • Support the project team with database management, and collecting, analysing, and storing data in an organized manner.
  • Assist collecting and updating of information through the Projects and other sources as well as data entries, progress reports, and preparation of charts and graphs, where appropriate.
  • Liaise with the Project Team and Country Office colleagues by way of supporting on required tasks such as preparation for forthcoming audits.
  • Perform any additional administrative tasks, including minute-taking and report writing.
  • Undertake any other relevant tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

 

Applicants to the UNDP internship program must, at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master's programme, or higher).
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor's degree or equivalent).
  3. Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

 

Family Relationship

A person who is the child or sibling of a UNDP staff member is not eligible to apply for an internship at UNDP. An applicant who bears any other family relationship with a UNDP staff member may be engaged as an intern, if they must neither be assigned to the same work unit as the staff member nor be placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member.

 

Medical Insurance

Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health before starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.

 

Stipends, insurance, and interns' expenses

Where an intern is not financially supported by any institution or program, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship program, a stipend intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station, must be paid by the receiving office. 

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, passports, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of:

  • The nominating institution, related institution, or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or
  • The intern.
