UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In Indonesia, UN Women works with government, civil society organizations, academia, the media, the public and private sectors to address national priorities of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Placing the advancement of women’s rights at the centre of our work, UN Women Indonesia focuses on (1) ending violence against women (2) women’s economic empowerment (4) governance, peace, and resilience.

To support the effective implementation of the communication plans and activities of the programmes, UN Women Indonesia Office seeks to embark on a series of targeted communications, visibility, publicity, and advocacy. In addition, UN Women Indonesia seeks to produce communications, advocacy and visibility materials on positive messaging on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In view of responding to the design needs of the office for the above-mentioned purposes, UN Women Indonesia Office seeks to hire a graphic designer for providing timely and qualitative design services. The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, which facilitates direct engagement of the consultant depending on need and availability within the contract period.

Duties and Responsibilities

The graphic designer will be responsible for design services for the communication and advocacy materials such as brochures, presentations, factsheets, infographics, posters, newsletters, books, social media cards and GIFs to support communications, advocacy and resource mobilization and to enhance visibility and understanding of UN Women activities in Indonesia and ASEAN as well as increasing the efficiency of its programmatic activities and specific campaigns and events.

  • Conceptualize, design, and layout of high-quality innovative, creative and attention-grabbing materials (print and online), for web-based communications as infographics, UN Women in house factographics, presentations, illustrations, web-based campaigns, and advocacy; promotion and training purposes as assigned by Programme Managers and Communication Officers;
  • Layout and design information and communication materials (banners, posters, booklets, leaflets, books, newsletters, flyers, cards);
  • Develop social media graphic design (e.g. GIFs, animated visuals, infographics, data cards, illustrations, quote cards, illustrated explainers) that are tailored to UN Women social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook);
  • Follow UN Women Branding Guidelines and identity standards;
  • Modify, revise and edit materials as required, in consultation UN Women team. UN Women team will support resource materials and/or reference documents as relevant;
  • Provide guidance to UN Women Indonesia on printing requirements and quality assurance.
  • Conduct quality control to ensure accurate and high-quality work;
  • Work in close collaboration with UN Women Indonesia team to ensure full compliance with the projects’ priorities.

Note: The graphic designer will be required to have her/his own technical and software-based equipment to deliver the services specified in this ToR.

 

Deliverables

  • Advocacy messages should be positive and empowering and reflect the diversity of the Asia-Pacific region in terms of ethnicity, age, gender, etc.;
  • Materials designed in such a way that they can be updated and adjusted for future use (all colours, pantones, fonts, inserted bitmaps or any other used resource should be included in the design package; fonts should not be converted to outlines in order to allow edits and adaptations in the future);
  • Ensuring the design of the materials is consistent with UN Women communications guidelines;
  • UN Women has non-exclusive world rights in perpetuity of all designed submissions and products;
  • Provide raw files upon request from UN Women.

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES: 

  • Proficient in graphic design, and the ability to create designs for digital media purposes.
  • Ability to convert complex and abstract ideas into simple visual infographics.
  • Proven ability to draw dignified illustrations and graphics featuring diversity.
  • Excellent drawing and designing skills, acute understanding of gender and social inclusion and intercultural sensitivity.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Secondary education, specific diplomas or technical studies in design or layout an advantage.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in design and strong layout skills.
  • Very good creative skills and advanced command over a full range of graphic design software, including Adobe Suite/CC such as illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop.
  • Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed products with knowledge of printing processes and colour management.
  • Experience in developing design related to women’s empowerment and gender equality is an advantage and will be considered.
  • Previous working experience with UN and other international organizations is an asset.
  • Strong integrity and respect for diversity, human rights and gender equality.
  • Ability to work quickly and responsively and demonstrative initiative.

Language and Other Requirements:

Proficiency in oral and written in English.
