Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Based in Abu Dhabi, the UN Women Liaison Office (LO) for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is working to strengthen partnerships, mobilize resources and raise awareness to advance UN Women’s key priorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), GCC countries, and beyond. The office is the first of its kind in the GCC. The office main priorities are to:
- Enhance coordination between different sectors to drive the mandate of UN Women in the UAE and GCC countries.
- Strengthen partnerships to drive Sustainable Development Goal 5 on advancing gender equality; further the women, peace, and security agenda.
- Realize progress on the women’s economic empowerment agenda in the UAE and GCC.
In 2017 UN Women convened a global industry alliance called the Unstereotype Alliance (“UA”), The purpose of UA is to eradicate harmful gender-based stereotypes in all media and advertising
content, UN Women LO for the GCC seeks to hire a program intern to support the UAE efforts in implementing the planned monthly meetings and UA donor and membership enrollment and provide support to the Unstereotype alliance National action plan for UAE.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide administrative support to the GCC LO Team, including but not limited to:
- Support in preparations for GCC LO activities and events for meetings, workshops, including logistical coordination and support.
- Support the partnerships specialist regularly to set up meetings with Unstereotype alliance clients to follow up on membership status, progress, and contributions.
- Support in consolidating various reports from partners related to UA program.
- Support to the GCC LO team for WPS events, dispatching online invitations, logistics notes and Agenda.
Assist the Communications Team in their day-to-day activities, which may include:
- Support in managing social media accounts and engaging with the audience.
- Compiling information necessary for content development and reporting.
- Assist in the editing and revision of reports, briefs, and other documents as needed to ensure accuracy and clarity.
- Draft letters and official correspondence in both Arabic and English languages.
- Provide support in additional tasks and projects assigned by the GCC LO, as required.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender studies, human rights, international relations, or business management.
Meet one of the following:
a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
c) Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
d) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.
Language:
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
- Working knowledge of another UN language and/or Arabic a distinct advantage.
Renumeration:
Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
