Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Based in Dakar, UNWOMEN West and Central Africa Regional office (WCARO) covers 12 countries either through Country Offices (Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone; Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger, Senegal, and Central African Republic)  and  through programme presence (Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau).

Ending violence against women (EVAW) is a priority area for the region which aims to advance integrated approaches to ensure that all women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence. This includes support to Member States, civil society and other partners to advance and monitor comprehensive, evidence-driven approaches to preventing violence against women and girls and ensuring coordinated multi-sectoral quality services are available to survivors, while promoting accountability to legal and policy commitments, in addition to support for women’s rights and civil society movements, with attention to intersectionality and leaving no one behind, with the aim of achieving the MDGs by 2015 and then the SDGs by 2030, the French government, through the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and as part of the Muskoka project, is supporting four UN agencies, including UN Women, to improve the health and well-being of women and girls in the West and Central Africa region.

This will involve changing negative social norms that discriminate against women and girls, access to basic services including sexual and reproductive health services, social and economic empowerment and increased decision-making power.

Under its Strategic Note 2018-2021,2022- 2025 UN Women WCARO focuses on delivering on four interlinked programme areas underpinned by support for intergovernmental and normative processes:
