Antecedentes
Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
Under the overall guidance of the Chief, Communications & Advocacy and under the direct supervision of the Senior Media and Communications Specialist and in close collaboration with the Website Specialist, the Web Editor is responsible for researching, writing and editing content for the UN Women website, ensuring that information about UN Women’s work and related news events are presented in a convincing and comprehensive way on the organization’s main corporate platform for public information.

Summary of key functions:
- Plans content for the UN Women website in close collaboration with focal points at HQ and in field offices;
- Researches, writes and edits news content for the UN Women website;
- Collates UN Women’s electronic newsletter Gender Connect;
- Collaborates closely with the Website Specialist to present and integrate content into the architecture and structure of the website;
- Coordinates translations of web content and the electronic newsletter Gender Connect.
Plans content for the UN Women website in close collaboration with focal points at HQ and in field offices, focusing on achieving the following results:
- Develops and maintains editorial calendar for the website as part of the overall editorial planning of the Communications and Advocacy Section and identifies potential material for further research and publishing;
- Collaborates and develops strong working relationships with colleagues at HQ and in the field;
- Develops guidelines and provides technical advice on relevant content matter for the UN Women website;
- Develops guidelines and provides technical advice on how to write content for the web;
- Proactively solicits submissions by field offices and HQ sections;
- Updates regularly the website content based on consultations with relevant sections.
Researches, writes and edits new content for the UN Women website, focusing on the following results:
- Maintains the UN Women website ensuring that it informs in a convincing way about relevant news and events highlighting the work of the organization, incl. major intergovernmental meetings, programmatic developments, travels of the Executive Director and Deputy Directors, UN Women–organized events, etc.;
- Ensures provision of in-depths insights about the programmatic impact and results of UN Women’s work in the field through feature articles, presentation of evaluation findings, etc.;
- Ensures introduction of new UN Women publications and videos on the UN Women website in a timely manner;
- Reviews, edits and/or proofreads submissions by field offices and HQ sections for publication;
- Complies and shares new content periodically with UN Women staff.
Collates UN Women’s electronic newsletter Gender Connect, focusing on achieving the following results:
- Manages and leads the publication of UN Women’s newsletter at least 4 times per year;
- Manages, solicits and edits thematic focus of newsletter editions;
- Re-edits content presented on the website for the newsletter as necessary;
- Manages selection of graphics and illustrations to accompany articles in collaboration with the Audio Visual Specialist.
Collaborates closely with the Website Specialist to present and integrate content into the architecture and structure of the website, focusing on the following results:
- Integrates the content in the most effective manner to attract relevant audiences, taking into account and building on the advantages of the dynamic content management system of the UN Women website;
- Manages new editorial content, where feasible, as part of editorial packages that include multimedia elements (video, photo, audio) and relevant links;
- Manages and edits content for electronic newsletter Gender Connect in a timely manner for coding and final production;
- Uploads new content to the website in the absence of the Website Specialist.
Coordinates translations of web content and electronic newsletter Gender Connect:
- Works closely with the Production Specialist to develop, to the extent possible, translation plan for web and newsletter content and ensure timely translation of English content into French and Spanish;
- Coordinates upcoming content for translation with the Media and Communications Specialist (Spanish) and the Media and Communications Analyst (French) into English;
- Monitors deadlines and delivery of translations for posting.
Impact of Results:
The key results have a significant impact on the visibility and reputation of UN Women as a leading source of knowledge and information in the areas of gender equality and women’s rights. The results have an impact on the success of the Strategic Partnerships, Advocacy, Civil Society, Communications and Resource Mobilization initiatives in supporting global advocacy and outreach campaigns, and on the performance of UN Women staff members, enabling access to and sharing of information and knowledge generated from within and outside UN Women and, thus helping UN Women achieve its strategic goals.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas
- Master or equivalent degree in journalism or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in editorial planning, writing and editing, preferably for websites.
- Fluency in English (written and oral);
- Knowledge of another UN language an important asset, preferably French or Spanish.
