Background

The Bureau for Development Policy (BDP), which supports the implementation of UNDP’s Strategic Plan (2008-2013), consists of four practice areas: Poverty Reduction and the MDGs, Democratic Governance, Environment and Energy, HIV/AIDS; and two cross-cutting areas: Capacity Development, and Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.

UNDP's work on poverty reduction is governed by several internationally agreed frameworks such as the Millennium Declaration, the MDGs, and the International Development Goals. UNDP’s work on poverty reduction is anchored in three basic principles– the multidimensionality of poverty, the centrality of equality (including gender equality), and the critical importance of a cross-practice approach.

In order to advance its mandate, UNDP’s Corporate Gender Equality Strategy (2008-13) was developed to outline in detail how UNDP will work towards gender equality in each of the goals and key results set out in the UNDP Strategic Plan (2008-13), including poverty reduction.

The BDP/Gender Team’s core services to support national efforts in reducing poverty and gender inequalities involve: (1) Policy advice and technical support; (2) Strengthening capacity of institutions and individuals (3) Advocacy, communications, and public information; (4) Promoting and brokering dialogue; and (5) Knowledge networking and sharing of good practices.
The BDP/Gender Team is organized into five clusters: Poverty; Environment; Governance and Crisis; Institutional Accountability/Interagency Cooperation; and Regional Advisors.
