Background

Launched in 2008, the Business Call to Action (BCtA) is a global membership platform that encourages private sector companies to develop innovative business models that combine profitability with development impact, in support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

BCtA is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which hosts the BCtA Secretariat, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), and the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF).

The Communications and Knowledge Events Coordinator Consultant will work under the supervision of the Knowledge Management, Capacity and Results Reporting Programme Specialist and in consultation with the Acting Programme Manager of the Business Call to Action Initiative.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications and Knowledge Events Coordinator Consultant will deliver the following services to the BCtA Secretariat under the supervision of the Knowledge, Capacity and Results Reporting Programme Specialist and in consultation with the Acting Programme Manager of the Business Call to Action Initiative:

Events Management
  • Manage the planning around 3 major events during Q1/Q2 as part of the Business Call to Action Initiative workplan;
  • Liaise with UNDP and UNGC press offices and strategic partners on high-level event planning;
  • Manage the production of 3 webinars;
  • Update strategic events calendar on a rolling basis;
  • Identify and create speaking opportunities for BCtA Secretariat and member companies
Media Outreach
  • Create and implement media strategies around 3 key events
  • Place 5 blogs on the BCtA or its member companies with influential news sites (The Guardian Sustainable Business Blog, Fast Company, Huffington Post, NextBillion, etc.)
  • Develop 2 op-eds to be placed in influential business media
  • Draft press releases or other information required to support BCtA company announcements or international outreach events organized during this assignment period Liaise with UNDP and UNGC press office representatives on dissemination of press releases
  • Media Awareness Strategy
  • The consultant will raise awareness of BCtA and of company initiatives through strategic partnerships with key media and development media organizations.
  • The consultant will identify opportunities to place articles on the BCtA in key media at local and international level to support BCtA's outreach strategy and events.
  • Drafting of press releases or other information required to support BCtA company announcements or international outreach events organized during this assignment period.
(This might include identifying 30 sectoral and generalized media options to be contacted, preparation of at least 10 pitches for media outlets, news and features stories).

Production and updating of BCtA Marketing Collateral
  • Updating of current BCtA collateral to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Creation of new marketing materials as appropriate and directed by the Secretariat
  • Creation of marketing collateral to support BCtA outreach events
  • BCtA newsletter and website content:
  • Production of at least two quarterly newsletters and updating of website content including set up of a contact management system, which might include the creation of various relevant forms (subscription, update, unsubscribe, etc.) and storage of BCtA stakeholders contacts with detailed information on their preferences. (This might include the creation of an electronic newsletter shell connected to the contact management system).
Management of BCtA webinar series
  • Production of quarterly webinars on topics of relevance to the BCtA
  • Branding and visibility of BCtA
  • The Consultant shall identify and support opportunities to create visibility for BCtA through its partner network, identification of high level Champions, relevant events and relationships with like-minded organizations, and academic institutions.
The consultant shall support the BCtA Secretariat in other communications/knowledge management tasks that may arise during the assignment period. The consultant shall be ready to undertake international travel on behalf of the Secretariat if required. The consultant will work closely with the communications office of the UNDP as well as the other partners of the BCtA in implementing this assignment.

Deliverables
  • Manage the planning around high-level events

The consultant shall report to the Knowledge Management, Capacity and Results Programme Specialist in consultation with the Acting Programme Manager of the Initiative. The consultant shall provide monthly updates on progress made in terms of the above deliverables.

Payments for work completed shall be made on a monthly basis based on deliverables submitted and deemed satisfactory by the Secretariat.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • An advanced degree in a Development, Communication, or Knowledge Management-related field.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant national/international working experience in Communications and Business and Development with previous experience with UNDP projects in the area of communications/PR around inclusive business would be considered as an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating large-scale events is essential.
  • Must be proficient with InDesign, Photoshop and WordPress.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing high quality articles for a business and development/donor audience (at least 2 written samples required with application).
  • Demonstrate experience in working in the field of inclusive business models or in a similar field of private sector and development including organization of high profile events, webinars and blog postings.
  • Knowledge of the web and how to integrate data into a web site.
  • Knowledge of social media tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Project management experience.
Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in English is required (written and verbal). Working knowledge of other UN official language(s) is desirable.
The consultant shall support the BCtA Secretariat in other communications/knowledge management tasks that may arise during the assignment period. The consultant shall be ready to undertake international travel on behalf of the Secretariat if required. The consultant will work closely with the communications office of the UNDP as well as the other partners of the BCtA in implementing this assignment

  • Complete CV/P11 (UN Personal History Form) including past experiences in similar projects and at least 3 references.
  • At least two samples of articles and knowledge products you have written and published.
  • A statement explaining why you are the most suitable candidate for the assignment.
  • Financial proposal specifying the daily fee which should include all related expenses including related benefits and insurance. All envisaged travel costs must be included in the financial proposal as a separate line.

Evaluation:
A cumulative analysis will be used. This method combines technical and financial proposals giving a weight of 70% to the acceptable technical proposals and 30% to the financial offer. Financial proposals will only be considered for candidates who meet the minimum 70% of the technical part.

Individual consultants will be evaluated based on the following methodology.

When using this weighted scoring method, the award of the contract should be made to the individual consultant whose offer has been evaluated and determined as:
  • responsive/compliant/acceptable, and
  • having received the highest score out of a pre-determined set of weighted technical and financial criteria specific to the solicitation.
  • Technical Criteria weight: 70%
  • Financial Criteria weight: 30%
Only candidates obtaining a minimum of 14 points would be considered for the Financial Evaluation.
