Antecedentes

UNDP’s partnership with the National Assembly is well established and has been recently developed through UNDP Deepening Democracy Project (DDTP 2007-2010) and the Legislature Support Project preparatory project (2010-2011). These projects contributed to strengthening the institutional capacity of the two parliaments. While gains were made, professional advice and technical assistance is still required to build the legislative and other capacities of Members, Parliamentary Committees, the Parliamentary Secretariats, and for parliaments to oversee the Executive and public spending and to reach out to the public.
UNDP Tanzania in line with the United Nations Development Assistance Plan (2011-2015) with the Government of Tanzania, plans to continue to assist in strengthening the parliaments to improve (i) legislative capacity, (ii) oversight functions (iii) representative capacity and (iv) democratic practices through institutional and operational (Secretariat) development.
Following the October 2010 general election a UNDP Preparatory Assistance (PA) project for the parliaments commenced and has focused on strengthening the capacity of the institutions through orientation programmes/training and technical support including revisions of Standing Orders, developing plans based on the needs and Corporate Plans of the parliaments, and finalizing the a multi-year project document for long-term technical assistance. It is expected that the new multi-year LSP project will commence on 1 September 2011.
