The UNDP Bratislava Regional Centre (BRC) is the organization’s main knowledge and advisory hub for the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. It aims to connect the region to a global network of development experts, to build knowledge and capacity, and to forge partnerships to meet the development challenges of a large and diverse region. The BRC also aims to capture and spread development successes and best practices in the region and to improve the impact of UNDP's work through effective communications and advocacy.

To help advance the partnerships agenda in the region, BRC has launched a new regional Initiative “New Partnerships in Development Cooperation” that will, among other priorities, support and promote east-east and triangular cooperation. This work is also part of the regional Agenda for Organizational Change project on East-East cooperation. One of the main tasks of the Initiative is to assess feasibility and test in practice new service lines in RBEC/BRC that can contribute to:
  • Facilitating complex horizontal partnerships focused on knowledge and taking the form of east-east and triangular cooperation initiatives, with particular focus on EU-12 countries, Croatia and Turkey.
  • Introducing innovative approaches to development assistance.
One of the key initiatives in the Emerging Donors / New Partnerships Unit (ED/NP) is the Czech-UNDP Trust (CTF), which supports development activities that involve sharing of experiences, good practices and lessons learned from Czech transition to democracy and market economy, as well as to EU membership. CTF supports projects related to: (a) HIV/AIDS prevention, (b) environmental issues, (c) democratic governance, and (d) economic transformation implemented in Balkans and Europe and CIS (ECIS) countries.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Intern will work under the guidance of the ED/NP team, in particular the New Development Partnerships Coordinator (60% time) and CTF Programme Associate (40% time) performing the following tasks:
  • Monitor important media/web sites of regional and global significance (as well as those of universities, think tanks, consultancies, individuals) for relevant analytical content pertaining to development trends in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region;
  • Perform desk research and provide background information and feedback for the ED/NP team on daily basis (including preparation of initial drafts of concept notes for events, etc.);
  • Support in improving the website of CTF (incl. learning about Czech transformation experience, understanding project’s content and writing short reports for the website/blog, thus helping to create a public online platform on Czech transformation know-how);
  • Prepare and update the content of the intranet-based Partnership Tracker, including liaising with relevant UNDP Units to get feedback on the content, including the projects map, newsfeed and partner pages to make sure that the information is up to date and tailored to users’ needs;
  • Assist in organizing ED/NP events for emerging donors in partnership with other UNDP Country Offices and Regional Bureaus;
  • Provide daily support to the members of EN/NP team and other BRC staff and acquire practical experience in various aspects of project management in an international work environment;
  • Assist the ED/NP in other areas, including administrative tasks and procurement, as needed.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Enrollment in a graduate level degree programme (second university degree or higher) in a development-related field such as economics, international relations, sociology, public or business administration, political sciences or environmental studies at the time of application to the internship;
  • Be familiar with international development cooperation and the UN system. Knowledge of New EU Member States and emerging donors will be an advantage.
  • Have excellent written and spoken English knowledge;
  • Knowledge of Czech or Slovak is a strong asset.
