Background

UNDP works in 46 African countries to promote the Millennium Development Goals. The Regional Bureau for Africa, through its field offices, implements national projects in 46 Sub-Saharan countries and implements regional projects that provide policy, programming and technical assistance to groups of countries as well as regional or sub-regional organizations. UNDP also coordinates all United Nations (UN) development activities at the country level as manager of the UN Country Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions: 

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Governance Specialist at UNDP-RBA, the intern assists the preparation of a “Research Paper on Right Timing/Sequencing for elections in post-conflict and peace building contexts”. The Intern promotes a client, quality and results-oriented approach.

The intern works in close collaboration with the staff of RBA as well as other relevant bureaus to ensure consistent service delivery.
Information management:
  • Collection and analysis of the topic’s related information, with focus on African countries taken as study cases, (DRC, South Sudan, Kenya, Sierra Leone and others).
Support and facilitate Information management:
  • Monitor, collect and analyze related information, with focus on Africa.

  • Incumbent’s own initiative is decisive in results of work and timely finalization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship (if a candidate is graduating before the internship period begins, they are no longer eligible); or
  • Have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree, if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
  • Not have graduated prior to the beginning of the internship.

Experience:

  • Computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Working knowledge of Wordpress and other web management programme is an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of French and Portuguese would be an advantage.

Conditions of the Internship:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. They are not staff. The costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.

Candidates who are selected must submit the following documents:

 

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Have a valid visa to work in the USA;
  • Have a medical and life insurance.

Subsequent Employment:

 

  • The purpose of Internship Programme is not to lead fo further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern's studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
