Background

The Arab Youth Volunteering for a Better Future Project is an initiative led by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. It is in line with the regional strategies of the United Nations (UN) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and supports the UN Secretary General’s Five Year Action Agenda (January 2012), in which he highlights the importance of working with and for young people as a priority. This regional initiative aims to harness the power and energy of youth through volunteerism, drawing on the inherent core values of self-help, solidarity and social cohesion. The Regional Project was launched in April 2013 and it works on strengthening the infrastructure necessary to build the skills and capacities of youth in the region. It therefore, works towards enhancing their social inclusion and active participation in the socio-economic development of their countries. The Regional Project is implemented in five countries, namely: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen.

Despite the plethora of initiatives and ongoing volunteer activities, several challenges remain with regards to strengthening the voluntary sector, particularly concerning youth and volunteerism. Volunteers between the ages of 15 – 24, are usually highly motivated but lack experience in planning, organizing teams and implementing activities, and thus face challenges in sustaining the work they have done.

In this context, the Arab Youth Volunteering for a Better Future project will support the implementation of a summer camp for volunteers in Jordan, with focus on capacity development through exchange of experience between volunteers. The overall aim of the camp is to support youth volunteers in their ongoing and planned activities, encourage partnerships between existing initiatives, and strengthen the network among youth volunteers in order to enhance the sustainability of volunteer initiatives in Jordan and encourage the development of new ones. The summer camp will be implemented by UNV Jordan and the Higher Council for Youth in Jordan.

The objectives of the summer camp are as follows:

  • Facilitate moments of encounter and exchange between youth volunteers from different backgrounds;
  • Enhanced capacities among volunteers in identifying community needs, planning and implementing volunteer activities, and understanding formal structures such as legal frameworks for volunteering; Exchanged knowledge and experience in community volunteering and explored opportunities for mentorship;
  • Develop a network among youth volunteers for exchange of experiences and partnerships;
  • Supporting sustainable opportunities for youth participation through volunteering.
