Historique
Arab women have been at the vanguard of the Arab Spring and their active political presence has created new momentum for meaningful citizenship and political participation within their respective states. Women in the Arab region have expressed their need for support to fully capitalize on the opportunity of the Arab Spring to reposition themselves in political and decision making spaces so that they can fully contribute to shaping the future of their countries. Central to these efforts is assisting Arab women to translate political engagement in the street during the Arab Spring into sustained political engagement at all levels of decision making, and to ensure that transitional bodies and processes respond to the needs and priorities of women and girls. UN Women has a unique opportunity to play an effective role in catalyzing the process of mobilization, and assisting the government and emergent constituencies in the formulation of new social contracts and national frameworks that are inclusive and responsive to women’s rights and concerns.
