Background

The Regional Services Centre in Istanbul supports UNDP’s analytical, programmatic, and policy advisory services in the countries of Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Turkey. The Deputy Regional Security Specialist fulfills all tasks related to the management of safety and security for UNDP personnel, assets and programs in the region under the Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS (RBEC), including direct support to the all Regional Country offices.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main task of an Intern will be to contribute to the accomplishment of various UNDP Regional Security initiatives. That would involve support to the Deputy Regional Security Specialist on following tasks:
  • Assistance in media monitoring and drafting of Regional Security updates;
  • Assistance with Security projects received from UNDP Security Office in NY;
  • The development of template forms for easy storage of standard information and regional security updates;
  • Assistance in work related to security researches requested by the DRSS;
  • Other required support to the work of DRSS.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Enrollment in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) in fields such as Security Management, Public Administration, Law or Social Sciences and other related security fields;
  • Security related studies or background is an asset.
Experience:
  • Previous security related work experience in a national or an international entity would be an asset but is not required.
Language skills:
  • Proficiency in written and spoken  English;
  • Turkish language knowledge.
Duration:

The overall duration of the internship is 3 months with possible extension up to 6 months, estimated start on 15 March 2014.

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;

UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.

Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out.
Have medical and life insurance.

Subsequent Employment:


The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies.
Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
