Antecedentes

UNDP Maldives has been working very closely with the Government of the Maldives, notably the Ministry of Energy and Environment in developing and implementing a sizable portfolio on climate change adaptation, mainly funded from the LDCF/GEF and Adaptation Fund. Currently, UNDP Maldives has the largest CCA portfolio in the Asia and the Pacific region managed by the Environment and Energy (E&E) Unit of UNDP Maldives. Projects currently implemented by the Unit include the Tourism Adaptation Project (TAP), Integrated Water Resource Management Project (IWRM), Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Project (DRRM), Integrating Climate Change Risk to Resilient Island Planning Project (ICCR) and a multi-agency programme on Low-Emissions Climate Resilient Development (LECReD). 

Furthermore, the Government of Maldives is preparing for the Third International Conference on SIDS to be held in Samoa in September 2014. UNDP will be providing support to the Government, in addition to its own participation in the Conference and side events.  

Under the guidance of the ARR (Environment and Energy) and the direct supervision of the Climate Change Programme Analyst, the Intern is expected to provide programmatic support to the E&E Unit in the implementation of existing projects as well as in the current and future activities within the environment, energy and climate change aspects of the Unit’s activities. The Intern will work in close collaboration with the UNDP programme and operations staff and government partners in ensuring successful UNDP programme development and implementation.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Scope of Work
  • Support to the implementation of current projects of the Environment and Energy Unit of UNDP Maldives, including assisting with on-going monitoring and evaluation activities, preparation of TORs and support to on-going technical missions to the country.
  • Support the knowledge management activities of the Environment and Energy Unit through various aspects of research.
Under the guidance of the ARR (Environment and Energy) and the direct supervision of the Climate Change Programme Analyst, the Intern is expected to provide programmatic support to the E&E Unit in the implementation of existing projects as well as in the current and future activities within the environment, energy and climate change aspects of the Unit’s activities. The Intern will work in close collaboration with the UNDP programme and operations staff and government partners in ensuring successful UNDP programme development and implementation.

A work plan will be agreed by the intern and UNDP Maldives at the beginning of the assignment where the expected outputs and milestones based on the Scope of Work as described above will be detailed.

The intern will report directly to the Climate Change Programme Analyst of UNDP Maldives. The duty station will be UNDP Office, Male’, Maldives. Infrequent travel to islands in the Maldives may be required. Such travel expenses will be covered by UNDP Maldives

  • Computer proficiency: MS Office; presentation skills and ability to creatively represent information is an advantage;
  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a team; and
  • Be willing to work within the framework of UNDP’s internship policies

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

  • Currently studying or enrolled for Masters programme or graduate-level degree programme in a development-related field such as economics, international relations, sociology, public or business administration, political sciences or environmental studies
  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of social sciences is required.
  • Relevant knowledge and experience in environment, climate change and/or SIDS issues is preferable.
  • Good Communication in English.

 

Status

  • The internship programme operates on a non-salaried basis. The subsistence and travel costs connected with the internship Programme must be borne by interns or by other institutions. Interns are responsible for arranging their own initial travel to Male, Maldives, health and medical insurance and accommodation. If work-related travel within the country is requested by UNDP during the internship period, per diem and travel costs shall be paid by UNDP. 
  • Interns are not considered to be staff members.  Interns shall not be sought or accepted as substitutes for staff to be recruited against posts authorized for the implementation of mandated programmes and activities. Interns shall not represent the United Nations in any official capacity. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in the UN Office for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
