Background

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
 
In collaboration with relevant UN Women sections at Headquarters and the field, the Training Centre develops and implements training for gender equality within UN Women’s strategic priorities with and for government and civil society partners, the UN system, and UN Women staff. It develops training programmes in gender equality and empowerment of women, in close partnership with ICT ILO and other UN training institutions, making maximum use of on-line training techniques and learning approaches.
 
The Training/Capacity Development Specialist post is based at UN Women Training Centre in Santo Domingo. Under the overall guidance and direction of the Training Programme Coordinator and in close collaboration with other sections at UN Women HQ, the incumbent will exercise responsibility for planning, implementing and managing UN Women training programmes/activities under portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of key functions:
  • Support the planning and design of training courses, manuals and tools;
  • Manage the development of training courses, manuals and tools;
  • Supervise the packaging, piloting and roll out of training courses;
  • Develop partnerships for curricula development;
  • Apply new technologies to the development of online courses and support the consolidation and development of online platforms.
Support the planning and design of training courses, manuals and tools:
  • Participate in the preparation of annual work plans for training/capacity building;
  • Support and contribute to the development and implementation of the Centre’s training framework and pedagogical design;
  • Coordinate the development of trainings and tools in selected areas in line with Annual Work Plan following the results of mappings and needs assessments, in collaboration with corresponding UN Women sections;
  • Evaluate the adequacy of existing training tools and make pedagogic adaptions as needed;
  • Identify and respond to training needs for UN Women and UN system staff;
  • Prepare concept notes, project profiles, road maps and budgets for the development of training courses, manuals and tools;
  • Use pedagogical best practices for gender training courses;
  • Keep abreast of new online tools, surveys and other pilot projects.
Manage the development of training courses, manuals and tools:
  • Lead the process for content identification of content and selection of resources;
  • Design the methodology for content development;
  • Coordinate the development of training courses and tools, in collaboration with corresponding UN Women sections and/or other partners;
  • Support quality assurance through the establishment of reference group/peer reviews as needed and coordinate their work;
  • Monitor delivery of work against plans and report on progress.
Supervise the packaging, piloting and roll out of training courses:
  • Confirm the learning mode (e-learning, face to face, blended);
  • Lead the procurement process and supervise the contracted work;
  • Define and coordinate the delivery channel;
  • Coordinate the translation to other languages and packaging of the new language versions;
  • Monitor delivery of work against plans and report on progress.
  • In collaborate with Communications Unit, support the widespread promotion of the training courses, manuals and tools;
  • Liaise with partners for delivery and replication of the training courses;
  • Support the regular evaluation of training courses, manuals and lead revision of materials when necessary.
Develop partnerships for curricula development:
  • Support the establishment of partnerships with reputable training entities within and outside the UN System;
  • With a view towards developing partnerships, identify individual and institutional experts in thematic areas covered by course development.
Apply new technologies to the development of online courses and support the consolidation and development of online platforms:
  • Support the application of new technologies to the development of online courses and training materials;
  • Keep abreast of available technology and apply it appropriately in the work of the Centre;
  • Keep abreast of new developments, approaches and best practices on gender training;
  • Further develop and maintain the Gender Training Community of Practice (GTCoP) ensuring that training information and tools are regularly used, relevant, updated and accurate; and ensuring regular communication and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned in addition to leading the establishment and maintenance of thematic sections with in the GTCoP;
  • Support the identification of experts and practitioners for the Gender Training Roster;
  • Support the identification of trainers to field offices as requested;
  • Ensure articulation between Training for Gender Equality, the GTCoP and Virtual Campus.
Impact of Results:
 
The post has an impact on the overall effectiveness and success of UN Women Training Centre interventions and activities. Efficient and prompt delivery of services will contribute to positioning the Training Centre as the leader in Training for Gender Equality among the UN training institutions.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Master degree or equivalent in Education, Gender, Social Sciences, International Development, or other related fields.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the fields of pedagogy, training/capacity development related to Gender and/or Development, Education, or other related areas;
  • Experience at the international level is highly desirable;
  • Experience in the design and management of e-Learning materials is highly desirable.
Language Requirements:
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English is required;
  • Knowledge of additional official UN language is desirable.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
