Background

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the charter of the United Nations, UN Women works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian actions and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of national priorities and efforts, building effective partnership with government, civil society and other relevant actors. 

The Communications Section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a Social Media Campaign Consultant (junior-level) to support the implementation of an online campaign on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the context of the Beijing+20 review process. S/he will assist the Social Media Manager in developing and implementing monthly social media plans in line with the overall campaign strategy. S/he will coordinate the development of different online assets as part of the campaign.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Social Media Manager, the Social Media Campaign Consultant will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop monthly social media plans with various online activities (Twitter chats, Google+ Hangouts and others), in line with the overall Beijing+20 campaign strategy;
  • Implement monthly social media activities in line with the social media plans and campaign strategy;
  • Coordinate the development of campaign assets, such as infographics and other visuals;
  • Contribute campaign content to UN Women’s social media accounts on a weekly basis by drafting messages for @UN_Women (and @ONUMujeres and/or @ONUFemmes, if possible), facebook.com/unwomen (and facebook.com/onumujeres and/or facebook.com/onufemmes, if possible), Google+ and other relevant social media platforms; research strong photos for the UN Women Pinterest account and pin them;
  • Engage the online audience for the campaign on UN Women’s online platforms;
  • Monitor engagement around the campaign, and manually showcase select social media posts on the UN Women website through the third-party tool Rebelmouse;
  • Coordinate social media outreach for the campaign by field offices with social media accounts and well as partners;
  • Support social media outreach and integration into big events organized in the context of the Beijing+20 review process; live tweet from relevant events;
  • Plan social media outreach for the main Beijing+20 event during the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in March 2015 and the culminating event in September 2015;
  • Regularly use analytics to measure engagement and the reach of the campaign, and adapt social media plans accordingly.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Masters Degree in Communications, Journalism, International Affairs, or similar.
Experience:
  • Minimum of one to two years of relevant experience;
  • Proven experience in communications, writing and editing;
  • Proven experience in the strategic use and monitoring of social media;
  • Proficient in using new technologies and web-based platforms;
  • Familiar with women’s rights issues;
  • Familiar with the United Nations;
  • Self-starter; organized; able to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities.

Language:

  • Fluent in written and spoken English, Spanish and/or French (both is a plus).

Note:

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
