Background

Brief Project Description: In support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and other involved governmental institutions, UNDP is testing innovative youth development approaches, analyzing results and lessons learnt and facilitating their integration in new policies/strategies/services related to youth development. The project focuses on Youth Employment, promotion of Healthy Life Styles and promotion of Civic Engagement as well as supporting the Ministry of Youth and Sports in developing a Strategy/Programme for Youth Development. The project also supports the design and implementation of multi-sectoral HIV/AIDS action plans with the focus on youth.

In line with the agreed Division of Labour within the UN System in Ukraine, UNDP is the lead organization promoting laws, policies, and practices for effective HIV/AIDS response with the focus on youth. UNDP implements projects to empower youth, and men who have sex with men and transgender people to better protect themselves from HIV infection, and supports activities at the nexus of HIV/AIDS and gender and sexual based violence. UNDP also partners with other UN agencies in reducing the sexual transmission through access to treatment and services, promoting comprehensive HIV services for people in prisons and drug users, enhancing social protection for HIV affected people and supporting the development and implementation of multi-sectoral national HIV/AIDS programmes with the focus on youth.


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction and overall guidance of the Project Manager, the Youth Project Assistant is expected to perform the following functions:
  • Support the Project Manager in the general implementation of the project. In particular:
    - providing logistical support to the organization of events at both national and sub-national/local levels;
    - ensuring suitable reporting and communications on the conducted events (participants’ analysis, feedback analysis, communication products, mass media analysis, etc.);
  • Support the Project Manager in verifying existing sport facilities in Ukraine via internet and subsequently by phone;
  • Help prepare analytical and information documents in the areas of youth employment, youth health and youth civic engagement as required by the project manager;
  • Support the Project Manager in activities linked with UNDP’s membership in UN joint working groups on Youth and HIV/AIDS;
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to:
  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Results/Expected Output:
  • Timely and well organized Project’s events;
  • Quality reporting on project’s events completion;
  • Timely and quality communication products;
  • Concrete quality contributions to analytical and information;
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during your assignment such as specification of mobilized volunteers, activities capacities.


Competencies

  • At least 22 years of age;
  • A graduate university degree, preferably in public health, humanities, political or social sciences or in business administration;
  • Knowledge in youth development, gender equality and social inclusion;
  • Fluent written and spoken Ukrainian and Russian. Excellent knowledge of English;
  • Applicant must be a citizen of Ukraine or legally resident in Ukraine.


Required Skills and Experience

The Youth Project Assistant must be a pro-active, dynamic and multi-functional person, with the following essential qualifications and abilities:
  • Familiarity with UN system, including UNDP activities and main partners in the country desirable;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Good analytical skills, and ability to multi-task and prioritize workload;
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
