Background

The UN Dispensary provides medical services to all UN employees and their dependents. The Dispensary has one United Nations Emaning Physician (UNEP) and the services of a nurse are needed to support the work of the UNEP.  The UN dispensary is the starting point where employees and dependets reach out to before being reffered to other medical facilities.  The UN Dispensary is located in the UN building for easy access to employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

General communication and assistance of patients.

  • Reception and assistance of patients for consultation by the UN Physician;
  • Assisting visitors, responding to patient bookings and other enquiry calls;
  • Giving advise to International and local UN staff and their dependants on available medical services in the country;
  • Be on call during outside office hours when necessary.

Treatment and care of patients.

  • Providing first line care to emergency/acute cases at the clinic in absence of the Physician;
  • Providing first line care and support to critically ill patients before transfer to major hospitals/clinics in the absence of the UN Physician;
  • Assisting in cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the absence of the UN Physician;
  • Treatment of minor ailments in the absence of the UN Physician;
  • Dispensation of doctor’s prescriptions including injections and immunizations, including dressings.

 Maintain clinic in good order and security of equipment.

  • Ensuring the clinic is clean and in a welcoming state;
  • Safe record keeping of patient files and their accessibility when needed;
  • Security of clinic movable and immovable equipment;
  • Safe keeping of medicines and ordering of adequate stocks;
  • Carry out monthly drug stock checking;
  • Checking and restocking the UN Physician’s medical emergency bag.

 Administrative work attached to clinic

  • Assisting in the smooth running of the clinic processes;
  • Maintain necessary information on medical doctors and facilities available in the country;
  • Ensuring confidential record keeping of patients records;
  • Compilation of monthly patient attendance statistics;
  • Support the Physician to clearly keep updated the records of all consultations and procedures carried out within the clinic including diagnostics;
  • Administration of petty cash.

 Assisting the UN Physician with procedures and other delegated duties and responsibilities

  • Processing of medical examinations: entry, periodic and exit;
  • Referral of patients to other UN Doctors in the absence of the UN Physician;
  • Referrals of patients other medical services which are not offered at the clinic Providing support to  emergencies after hours as might be requested by the UN Physician;
  • Escorting patients (when absolutely required) for specialised treatment at local major hospitals and subsequent evacuations to South African Hospitals;
  • Preparation of outreach equipment for the UN Doctor;
  • Any other duties assigned by the UN Physician.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Secondary school nursing certificate. Degree in nursing desirable;
  • Registration in the Order of the Nurses of Angola, mandatory;
  • Critical Care and Trauma Certificate, added advantage;
  • Certificate in Cardiac Life support, added advantage.

Experience

  • A minimum of 7 years practical experience with broad experience in general nursing/midwifery or public health nursing;
  • Experience in occupational health, working in an NGO or a private company is an added advantage;
  • Computer Literacy (word, excel and power point).

Language:

  • Fluency in Portuguese and working knowledge of English;
  • French an added avantage.
