Background

Under the guidance and general supervision of the UNDSS Security Advisor and direct supervisor, the Radio Operator operates the emergency communications system which includes radio communications – VHF and HF, telephone and Internet facilities to transmit and receive communications and maintains records pertaining to said communication ensuring high quality and accuracy of work.

The position is funded from locally cost-shared security budget and not from UNDSS core budget”.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures continuity of service of Radio Control Room under United Nations Department of Safety and Security;
  • Ensures that the Radio Control Room remains a restricted area except for staff of UNDSS and not allow unauthorized persons access to the Radio Control Room;
  • Monitors and controls radio frequencies;
  • Conducts radio checks according to Radio check list, maintains a record of such checks;
  • Tracks all UN vehicles movements throughout the country on a regular basis and providing the agencies and responsible person with the security information. The result of each contact must be recorded in the logbook;
  • Assists UNDSS Office in updating all emergency contact information and provide necessary emergency information to all UN staff during the emergency situations as required;
  • Dispatches the Emergency Response Team (ERT) to staff locations whenever there is a serious security/safety incident and informs the LSA/SA;
  • Provides first response in the event of an incident, liaising with and coordinating all necessary assistance from appropriate authorities - UN Physician, fire, police, ambulance, etc;
  • Monitors local press and internet media sources in country for relevant security incidents and issues likely to affect the UN System;
  • Drafts  security and incident reports;
  • Briefs Staff Members on the use and care of assigned communications equipment;
  • Assists with the production of UN Identification and emergency contact cards;
  • Performs all other related duties as requested by the UN Security Advisor and UNDSS Local Security Associates.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Completion of Secondary school is required.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years’ work experience as a radio operator. Prior experience with the UN system or an international NGO is desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in French and the national language(s) of the duty station.
