Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

To support our global communications strategy, the Communications & Advocacy department seeks a qualified photographer, photo editor and photo consultant to support the multimedia production of the department under the overall guidance of the Audio-visual specialist, including in the Beijing+20 public mobilization campaign as well as the day-to-day production of photographs on the UN Women website, in print products and on all relevant social media platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

Arranges for, supervises and/or undertakes photography of UN Women events (meetings, bilaterals, etc.) and staff members as needed, focusing on the following results:

  • Provides edited photos for use on UN Women social media and website;
  • Photographs new headshots of UN staff members for use by the media;
  • Maintains UN Women Global flickr account by uploading photos with appropriate embedded photo metadata;
  • Liaises with consultant photographers as needed at HQ and in the field.

Manages the daily photo workflow for the UN Women website and social media accounts, as well as media requested as needed, focusing on the following results:

  • Oversees and provides editorial photos to web and social media colleagues;
  • Maintains UN Women global Flickr account ensuring that it is regularly updated with new photo material and related captions;
  • Maintains and updates the photo archive for UN Women website, and multimedia and print productions;
  • Arranges for and/or undertakes photo research for UN Women publications and website in close collaboration with the Production Specialist;
  • Maintains and expands a roster of freelance photographers and photo researchers;
  • Responds to media requests for photos. 

Provides guidance and support to UN Women HQ sections and field offices, focusing on the following results:

  • Maintains guidelines on ethical photo reportage;
  • Supports and coaches regional communications officers in maintaining regional Flickr account;
  • Monitors regional UN Women Flickr accounts for quality and branding;
  • Provides photo guidance related to visits of the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Directors as needed;
  • Provides photo guidance for field projects as needed.

Archives photo material on UN Women’s Digital Asset Management system (DAMS):

  • Archives photos on UN Women’s Digital Asset Management system. Archiving includes assigning filenames, pulling technical information, determining permissions, writing descriptions and cataloguing content under appropriate categories;
  • Responds to audiovisual requests for material from the DAMs as needed.

  • In-depth knowledge of photo editing; familiarity with Photoshop and/or similar editing software;

  • Good knowledge of and interest in online distribution channels, including commercial channels; 
  • Knowledge of Office software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access);
  • Outstanding organizational and time-management skills;

  • Familiarity with the UN system an asset.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University degeree in Photojournalism, Communications, Journalism or related field. 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience as a working photographer. 

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (written and oral);
  • Another official UN language is an asset. 

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
