Background

UNFPA South Sudan launched the Youth-Peer Education Network (now called South Sudan Youth – Peer Education Network also referred to as Y-PEER) during the celebration of 2009 International Youth Day that was organized by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and supported by the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In South Sudan, the Y-PEER programme focuses on reinforcing the status and credibility of peer education.  The anecdotal evidence so far has shown that the Y-PEER Network model has also promoted a comprehensive and multi-sectoral response to reducing the vulnerability of young people to HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and to empowering them to become active partners in efforts to stem the pandemic.

During the current humanitarian emergencies in South Sudan family and social structures are disrupted, adolescent are separated from their families or communities, while formal and informal educational programmes are discontinued and community and social networks break down. The loss of livelihood, security and the protection provided by family and community places adolescent at risk of poverty, violence and sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) and their consequences.

Under the overall guidance of the RH Technical Specialist and direct supervision by the Assistant Representative (RH), the Peer Educator Analyst will assist in the planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of youth peer education programmes. This will include close liaison and collaboration with the HIV/AIDS Analyst and the humanitarian response Team on activities targeting young people in ASRH programming.
